Brazos Progressives and Brazos Writers Welcome AccessFilms to ...

BRYAN, TX?Brazos Progressives and Brazos Writers are proud to welcome AccessFilms to Red Wasp 2012! On Saturday, October 27, 1:00-4:00 pm at StageCenter Community Theatre in downtown Bryan, TX. Brazos Writers joins forces with the Red Wasp Film Festival to present a workshop on screenplay writing led by screenwriter Ben Wiggins, who is the founder and Development Executive at AccessFilms. Wiggins is a 2000 graduate of Texas A&M Consolidated High School, who went on to receive his undergraduate degree from Rice University and a Master of Science degree in Sports Management from Texas A&M University.

Based in Encino, California, AccessFilms is a ?go-to? resource for those interested in becoming successful filmmakers. AccessFilms? clients work with experienced actors, directors, writers, and producers to get their clients? film dreams onto the big screen. Wiggins founded AccessFilms in 2010, after becoming interested in filmmaking as a career when he was in graduate school. ?Filmmaking continues to hold my interest because it?s creative,? he said. ?There?s a ton of risk in the industry, but it?s worth it to get to create a story that will inspire and speak to people.?

Wiggins describes the screenwriting workshop he?ll conduct at Red Wasp as being ?an exciting and fast-paced three hours. It will cover the elements of story in detail? and will feature ?discussion on dialogue, subtext, visual description, and technological aids? for screenwriters.

This past spring, Access Films conducted workshops at the Texas Film Festival, a festival at Texas A&M University organized by the Aggie ScreenWriting, Acting, and Movie Production Club (Aggie SWAMP Club). ?Film festivals are the chief initial venue for most independent films. They are a place for filmmakers to meet and share ideas, for film fans to meet, and for everyone to come to a better understanding of how the industry works,? stated Wiggins. ?Without film festivals, the current state of the industry could not last.?

This year is the tenth year anniversary of the Red Wasp Film Festival. Each year, Brazos Progressives organizes this showcase of independent film in historic downtown Bryan, TX.

The Red Wasp Film Festival will be Friday, October 26, and Saturday, October 27, at StageCenter Theatre in downtown Bryan, TX. Doors open at 6 pm each evening, with the screenings beginning at 6:30 pm. The workshop will be Saturday, October 26, 1:00-4:00 pm, at StageCenter. Tickets for the film screenings and workshop will be available at the door. Tickets for film screenings are $25/both nights or $15/one night, and tickets to the workshop are $10 each. Students (with a valid student ID) can purchase tickets for the film screenings for $15/both nights or $10/one night, and student tickets to the workshop are $5 each.

Protests fizzle during GOP convention

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? The three dozen chanting anti-GOP protesters hit a lull of silence as they marched through a low-income neighborhood in west Tampa. "What are you guys doing? Taking a nap?" shouted one protester to his cohorts, exhorting them to yell. Another shouted, "You guys are reeeeaaal quiet now!"

Quiet is the right word for protests at the Republican National Convention in Tampa this week. They have been unexpectedly muted and even the protesters know it. Thousands of demonstrators had been expected but only hundreds arrived, mostly Green Party supporters, Occupy Wall Street activists, anarchists and union stalwarts.

Only two arrests have been linked to protests so far ? one man for carrying a machete, the other for wearing a bandanna in violation of a city ordinance. That's compared to several hundred in St. Paul, Minn., four years ago. Her streets have been so tranquil that Police Chief Jane Castor canceled news conferences because there was no trouble to report.

Activists blame the threat of Hurricane Isaac, the overwhelming police presence, undercover law enforcement infiltration of their ranks and even the ghost-town nature of downtown during the convention week. Some activists worry they have no momentum built for the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., next week, and then the anniversary of Occupy Wall Street next month.

"Unless you have the numbers out on the street, you really can't change anything," said Nick Sabatella, 25, an Occupy Wall Street activist from New Jersey.

The protesters were behind the eight ball even before the convention started. The threat of Hurricane Isaac stopped at least 16 busloads of activists from coming to town because bus operators didn't want their equipment and drivers headed into possible danger. Downpours on Monday put a damper on a kickoff march that drew only several hundred protesters, not the 5,000 marchers that had been anticipated. And rain continued off and on throughout the week.

"Nobody came down because of this weather," said Jeff Smith, a 38-year-old construction worker from New York, who is part of the Occupy Wall Street movement.

Smith also faulted the protest leaders and the tight security.

"They don't seem to be too organized down here," he said. "Probably because there are cops on every corner."

Groups of officers are stationed everywhere downtown. They are riding around in packs on bicycles and are using helicopters for surveillance.

While many activists praised the police for their restraint and politeness, they said the number of officers on the streets was overkill.

"I'm really sad that every four years there is more of a militarization of the police at these conventions," said Cheri Honkala, the Green Party's vice presidential candidate. "It's a waste of taxpayers' dollars and it really scares me that someday there will be nobody left marching."

The police presence isn't just in uniform.

In "Romneyville," a tent village of protesters about a mile from the convention, the residents are well aware that undercover officers have infiltrated their ranks and that they tend to be among the more aggressive "activists."

"You know how if you go into Macy's around the holidays and somebody tries to shoplift something, and you then realize there are actually no shoppers, that they're all undercover police officers? That's the case here," Honkala said.

Without hard confirmation, they have let their suspected undercover officers stay.

"You can't get rid of people if you can't prove it on the spot," Honkala said.

Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn said at a news conference Thursday that he had expected few arrests as the convention wraps up Thursday night.

"We have trained so hard and so long for this," Buckhorn said. "When this is said and done, this will be the benchmark that every city should strive for."

Castor said her strategy was to approach the protesters, ask what their goals are and then help them reach them. Often, protesters simply wanted to pose in an intersection for the media. She let them if they didn't intend violence. Officers even took leftover food to Romneyville.

"Everyone was to be treated with dignity and respect," Castor said.

The nature of downtown also made it harder for protesters to be heard. Few people live there and many businesses told their workers to stay away during the convention, leaving the streets nearly empty.

"We could protest until we're blue in the face but there weren't people normally around to see that," said Darrell Prince, a 35-year-old political fundraiser from New York who is part of Occupy Wall Street. "Whether it was intelligent design or they were just fortunate, it worked out for the RNC."

On Thursday, 16 protesters, watched by 35 officers, marched from Romneyville to Domino's Pizza to protest corporate-owned businesses. Despite the low numbers, protesters eked out some victories.

Later Thursday, about 300 of them marched to the barricades outside the convention area, with a few dressed in tuxedos and pig snouts chanting "Greed is good."

As Paul Ryan was in the midst of a speech accepting the vice presidential nomination Wednesday on the convention floor, he was disrupted by a pink banner and a yelling protester from the feminist group Code Pink. She was escorted out as some in the crowd shouted "U-S-A, U-S-A."

Many Romneyville residents are relocating their impromptu community to Charlotte and the Democratic convention. They are hoping for bigger crowds and more energy, drawing on Occupy activists from cities along the Eastern seaboard.

"Who knows?" Sabattella said. "Maybe it can still happen."

How Old Is Too Old to Drive?

Aug 30, 2012 1:57pm

ap Preston Carter 100 year old driver accident thg 120830 main How Old Is Too Old to Drive?

Preston Carter, 100 year old driver, injures 11 in Los Angeles accident.

A driver who will be 101 in September backed out of a parking lot near an elementary school in Los Angeles, plowing into 11 people, including nine children. ?Fortunately no one died as a result of the incident on Wednesday, but it highlights the challenge that aging drivers and their families face in deciding when it?s time to get off the road.

Although they only account for about 9 percent of the population, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration statistics show senior drivers account for 14 percent of all traffic fatalities and 17 percent of all pedestrian fatalities.

A recent report by Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found the rate of deaths involving drivers 75 to 84 is about three per million miles driven ? on par with teen drivers. Once they pass age 85, vehicular fatality rates jump to nearly four times that of teens.

Richard Nix, executive director of Agingcare.com, says many senior drivers don?t realize their eyesight, hearing and reflexes aren?t as sharp as they used to be. They may be taking medication that impairs judgment, memory or coordination or suffer from arthritis or Alzheimer?s. Consequently they may not realize it when they blow past a stop sign, forget to signal a right turn or confuse the gas pedal with the brake.

Even when they admit to themselves that they?re driving skills may not be up to par, some older drivers are still reluctant to hand over their keys. According to Nix, loss of driving privileges is a difficult and emotional issue for many.

?People have been driving their whole life and have trouble believing they?re incapable of continuing,? he said. ?They feel like their independence has been taken away.?

And Nix points out, it?s frequently a difficult subject for loved ones to face as well. They may feel a pang of fear every time their elderly parent gets behind the wheel but are reluctant to confront them for fear of hurting their feelings are starting a battle.

Nix says that if need be enlist the help of other family members, friends or their physician when a loved one presents a danger on the road. In some cases, it may even be appropriate to take legal action, though laws vary from state to state.

Whether an elderly driver comes to the conclusion on their own that it?s time to surrender their license or they?re forced to do so, it?s a big moment and it can be devastating. But the consequences of not doing so may be even more devastating.

Consider the case of George Russell Weller, an 86-year-old Los Angeles driver who?suffered from arthritis, nausea as a side-effect of medication, and reduced mobility from a?hip replacement. Weller?s car struck another car then accelerated around a road closure sign, crashed through wooden sawhorses, and plowed through a busy marketplace crowd, killing 10 people and injuring another 63. Weller told investigators he had accidentally placed his foot on the accelerator pedal instead of the brake.

Agingcare.com offers the following advice for senior drivers to evaluate when it?s time to stop driving:

  • Conditions like cataracts and glaucoma can diminish sight and hamper driving ability. An eye doctor can help establish whether your sight is good enough to drive safely.
  • Many older drivers no longer have the strength or dexterity to handle a car. They may shrink in height so much they can no longer see over the windshield. This is especially true for seniors who do little or no physical activity.
  • Alzheimer?s can impair memory and judgment. Diabetics risk falling into a coma while driving. Even if you have long periods of time when health issues cause no problems, why risk it?
  • Medications, especially multiple medications, can greatly impair driving ability. Your doctor should advise you of the dangers your medications present while driving.
  • If the minor fender-benders are adding up or you simply feel less confident about driving, it?s OK to admit it to yourself that your driving days are over.

ODM Facilitates Hurricane Exercise; Prime Minister Contacts Governor for Military Support

GREAT BAY, Sint Maarten (DCOMM) ? As the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season is about to go into its fourth month, the season has already seen 11 storm systems develop with Tropical Storm Isaac over land in Louisiana and Tropical Storm Kirk in the far North Atlantic Ocean, the latter posing no threat to land at this time.
Disaster Coordinator/Fire Chief Winston Salomon of the Office of Disaster Management (ODM) says that ODM is facilitating the current Hurricane Exercise training that is underway.
Riot training is scheduled for Wednesday evening going into the night in Philipsburg which will also include Voluntary Korps of Sint Maarten and the Red Cross.
On Thursday Emergency Support Function (ESF-4) the Fire Department, will do a cross-training with the Marines.
The exercise started last week under the scenario that a storm was approaching the country.? The system intensified over the weekend and on Monday the Prime Minister ? who is responsible for Disaster Management ? requested military assistance through the Governor.
The objective was to test all procedures.? Formal exercise permission was received resulting in a contingent of Marines traveling to Sint Maarten.
The country?s disaster management system comprises of 10 ESFs.?
The ODM reminds the community to make sure everybody has everything in place and are storm ready.?
Everybody must take the required actions to minimize the risk of injury and damage to property in case there is a hurricane strike, and the time to act is now if you haven?t already.??
The remaining names of potential storms for the 2012 season are: Leslie, Michael, Nadine, Oscar, Patty, Rafael, Sandy, Tony, Valerie and William.
The hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30.

It?s gray and cloudy here on St. Maarten this morning. The satellite shows a ?blob? right over us.

Isaac is still a storm but not a hurricane.? He has managed to cause? a lot of people a lot of problems.

Now they say he is headed towards New Orleans, not a good scenario at all.

I put on my blog two videos that someone posted on YouTube of an Air France plane trying to land on St. Maarten during Isaac.

Take a look!

Pretty interesting!

Isaac is past us, on his way to threaten others. I hope he will not bother anyone too badly.

We had a pretty nice day today but continue to have high winds (22 - 28 MPH with higher gusts) and the ocean is churning.

The surfers are happy, I imagine.

Here are a couple of pictures I took of the waves in Great Bay harbour and Pointe Blanche this afternoon.

Good morning.

Hoping everyone in the islands south of us are doing? OK. I saw some pictures online from Martinique which looked like that island received quite? a bit of rain.

For St. Maarten thankfully, Isaac has been the storm that wasn't.

We had some heavy wind last night. Even this morning it is gusty with rain showers, but the sun keeps trying to shine through. We have had no significant rainfall from Isaac.

We had wind steadily from the ENE yesterday and at 7:00 AM this morning the Met Office at the airport reported winds from the ESE at 20 MPH with rain showers.

Wishing safe conditions for the islands still possibly in the line of fire.

Well, we have woken up to a grey, damp windy morning. The wind started picking up in the early hours and there is a little rain, not much though - so far. The gusts are quite strong and according to the local weather station are currently reaching up to ?70km/h. The Dutch side announced last night that the schools would re-open today and it even states in the local paper that the storm has passed - a bit premature I think!

?

So far here on the French side, people seem to be going about their normal business this morning and hopefully things will not deteriorate further.

?

It seems Issac has been a gentle giant so far. It is nice to have cool winds though!

Sitting in St. Maarten and waiting for Isaac.

Currently Isaac is forecast to pass about 100 miles south of us overnight.

Right now the weather is cloudy and breezy with occasional light rain.

Everything seems pretty normal on the island. I haven?t seen any mad rush for gas or groceries.

We did secure our boats and actually took the little Boston Whaler out of the water...just in case.

My biggest concern from Isaac at this point is how much rain we will get from it.

If we have problems it will be more from flooding rather than wind.

So far so good today. We will see what the overnight hours bring.

Wishing safe passage of Isaac to our Caribbean friends, and especially to the islands south of us.

?

And hi to Gert who is watching and monitoring and reminding me to post updates.

Price controllers to be out to prevent price gouging
?
GREAT BAY, Sint Maarten (DCOMM) ? Section Inspection Head at the Department of Economic Affairs M. Thewet says economic controllers are currently out ?Wednesday- to prevent price gouging with respect to the passing of Tropical Storm Isaac.

The island is currently under a Tropical Storm Warning.? Tropical Storm Isaac is forecast to pass Wednesday night approximately 110 miles South of the country.

It has become common practice in different parts of the world when a natural disaster such as a hurricane strikes, a number of retailers will try to take advantage of the victims.

Price gouging is when a retailer unnecessarily and callously increases their prices during a time of great panic or in an emergency situation.??

In order to avoid the above situation, the Office of Disaster Management has advised residents prior to the start of the hurricane season to prepare a disaster kit which should include non-perishable canned foods, water, batteries etc.

Food items and sanitary products with a maximum price are: corned beef, sardines, soup, tuna in the can, vienna sausages, bottled water, toothpaste, mouth wash, dishwashing liquid, bath soaps, toilet paper, soap powder, disinfectant, batteries, glass candles, and hurricane lamps.

Government has also set maximum prices for building materials that are used for securing one?s home or business during the last hours pending a hurricane strike.

The maximum prices are for lumber, ply form, nails (galvanize, steel, concrete, zinc nails), paint, hammers, felt paper, flush doors, roof zinc, blocks, cement, P.V.C. fittings, and C.P.V.C.

As a consumer, if you believe that a merchant has cheated or scammed you by engaging in price gouging, then you can call the Inspection Department at Tel. 543-7820, 542-4519 to file a complaint or email eainspection at sintmaartengov.org.

Well this morning the sky is grey and there is a good breeze but nothing too dramatic. the Dutch Government have announced schools are closed today but businesses open as normal. The cruise ship Allure of the Seas has cancelled its arrival for tomorrow. Here on the French side, everything is running as normal and have just seen a couple of trucks on the side of the road clearing any last minute debris. The seas are quite calm for now.

Let's see what Issac brings us later today and tomorrow.

NFL to use replacement officials for Week 1

NEW YORK (AP) ? The NFL will open the regular season next week with replacement officials and said it was prepared to use them "as much ... as necessary" afterward.

Replacements will be on the field beginning Wednesday night when the Dallas Cowboys visit the New York Giants in the season opener, league executive Ray Anderson told the 32 teams in a memo. Negotiations are at a standstill between the NFL and the officials' union.

The NFL Referees Association was locked out in early June and talks on a new collective bargaining agreement have gone nowhere. Replacements have been used throughout the preseason, with mixed results.

In 2001, the NFL used replacements for the first week of the regular season before a contract was finalized. The speed of the game and the amount of time starters are on the field increase exponentially for real games, making the replacements' task more challenging.

Anderson, the NFL's executive vice president of football operations, told the clubs in a memo Wednesday that the replacements will work "as much of the regular season as necessary," adding that training with each crew will continue.

The NFL noted it has expanded the use of instant replay as an officiating tool this year to include all scoring plays and turnovers. Officiating supervisors will be on hand to assist the crews on game administration issues.

"We are not surprised, based on Ray Anderson's statements ... that the NFL was not going to reach out to us," NFLRA spokesman Michael Arnold said. "However, this is consistent with the NFL's negotiating strategy which has been 'take it or leave it and lock them out.' It now appears the NFL is willing to forego any attempt to reach a deal in the last seven days before opening night."

The NFL Players Association, which went through a 4 ?- month lockout last year before settling on a new contract, expressed disappointment about the decision to use replacements.

Colts safety Antoine Bethea said there is a feeling of solidarity with the officials.

"They've got to do what they've got to do, and we were in a similar situation a little while ago," Bethea said. "So you can't fault those guys for doing what they have to do."

Anderson said the sides remain considerably apart on economic issues, including salary and retirement benefits. He also told the teams there is a substantial difference on operational issues.

"One of our key goals in this negotiation is to enhance our ability to recruit, train, and replace officials who are not performing adequately," Anderson said. "We believe that officials should be evaluated and performance issues addressed in the same way as players, coaches, club management and league staff. We have proposed several steps to accomplish this, including having a number of full-time officials and expanding the overall number of officials."

The NFL is offering to add three full officiating crews, increasing the total number of officials to 140. The NFLRA insists the compensation being offered with such an increase would reduce the officials' pay.

The league is proposing having seven officials ? one per position of referee, umpire, line judge, side judge, back judge, field judge, head linesman ? who would train, scout, handle communications, safety issues and rules interpretations year-round. Now, all NFL game officials are part-time employees, with outside jobs ranging from lawyers to teachers to business owners.

In response, the NFLRA has said it is not opposed to full-time officials "if they are fairly compensated."

The union also disputes the value of the league's current salary offer, which it says would not be the 5 percent to 11 percent increase the NFL claims.

And the union questions the league's adherence to player safety initiatives by using replacement officials, none of whom has recently worked Division I college games. Many of the officials who were replacements in 2001 came from the Division I level.

"The league has placed a lot of emphasis on player health and safety in the last few years and we do feel we are an integral part of that," Arnold said. "We think it is unfortunate and we really don't understand why the league is willing to risk playing safety and the integrity of the game by utilizing amateur officials."

Anderson told the teams that the replacements have "undergone extensive training and evaluation, and have shown steady improvement during the preseason."

Arnold disagreed.

"The referees want to get back on the field," Arnold said. "Our members have been engaged in extensive preparations and are ready to go."

Reddit is getting a fundraising button

22 hrs.

Being ?the front page of the Internet? comes with power, and Redditors have often, if not a bit spontaneously, channeled that power for fundraising.

Among their good deeds: giving a bullied senior citizen bus monitor a $700,000 vacation budget, scrounging up $31,000 overnight to help a three-year-old who needed a bone marrow transplant, and contributing more than $180,000 to Haiti earthquake relief efforts.

Now, for the first time, Reddit users will be able to execute some of these fundraisers within Reddit-branded pages.

Starting today, managers of the site's topic pages, or Subreddits, can opt to accept donations to specific nonprofits by installing new "Donate" buttons on their Subreddit pages. The TwoXChromosomes Subreddit, for instance, will add a button to support She's the First, an organization that supports girls' education in the developing world.

The buttons and the donation system they're attached to, Reddit Donate, were developed by payment startup Dwolla in partnership with another payment startup called Stripe. It will launch with 12 nonprofit partners, including Kiva, Charity: Water, and DonorsChoose.?

Many Subreddits are already active fundraisers. The atheism Subreddit, for instance, helped raise more than $200,000 for Doctors Without Boarders by directing traffic to a third-party fundraising page.

Without a Reddit tool for accepting donations, most fundraising Redditors have, like the athiest group, pointed each other to crowd funding sites such as Indiegogo, independent funding sites, and custom landing pages on charities' websites to contribute.

At times it can be unclear, however, where the money is actually going. Money raised for the bullied bus monitor's vacation, for instance, was collected on an Indiegogo page that was not set up in her name, but a Redditor's name. If a less scrupulous person had created the page, the story may have lost its happy ending.

?We want to protect our community, and for it to know that if it donates $100, that it's going to the right person and not to various fees,? Erik Martin, the general manager of Reddit, tells Fast Company.

Dwolla removes credit card numbers from transactions--and with them a handful of third-party financial-service providers?-and thus is able to charge an impressively low fee of $.25 for transactions more than $10 (transactions involving less than that are free). Money travels directly from donors' bank accounts to nonprofits' bank accounts. Stripe keeps the credit card in the process and charges 2.9% plus 30 cents per transaction.?

Reddit has taken other steps to support charitable efforts initiated in its site, but none so significant.

Earlier this month, the site named Crowdtilt its official fundraising partner. A newly-launched startup, Crowdtilt enables anyone to raise money for any kind of project, and it promised Reddit to wave fees and verify that donated money ends up where it is intended.

It's difficult to verify how organizations that aren't registered nonprofits are spending their money, so the Dwolla and Stripe button only applies to nonprofit partners for now. That leaves out the individual-specific causes Reddit is famous for supporting.

Ben Milne, the CEO of Dwolla, tells Fast Company that if Redditors embrace it, there's likely room for the project to evolve. For now, the new feature formalizes a giving habit that has already become part of Reddit's reputation.

?It?s just like anyone could always raise money for their project," says Milne, "but it got way easier when Kickstarter launched.??
