[APK Teardown] Google Keyboard v1.1: Space-Aware Gestures, External Dictionaries, Hidden Settings, And More

Earlier today, Google released a relatively minor update to its keyboard application with only one really useful change: numbers in the top row on tablets. While the update itself is indeed not too significant, it did manage to bring several interesting half-baked under-the-hood bits which aren't quite ready for consumption. These are exactly the kinds of bits we like here in the AndroidPolice teardown kitchen.

Armed with some of Ron's initial findings, my teardown partner Santiago Rosales and I dug into the innards of the v1.1 APK. Here's what we discovered.

Space-aware gestures

Remember SwiftKey's Flow Through Space which lets you swipe through multiple words without lifting a finger by swiping through the space bar? I bet this feature, when it's ready, will be exactly the same or very similar. It's marked as confidential in the strings.xml - so mysterious!

<string name="gesture_space_aware">Phrase gesture (Confidential)</string>
<string name="gesture_space_aware_summary">Input spaces during gestures by gliding to the space key</string>

There is a function called forceSetEnableSpaceAwareGesture() that enables space-aware gestures, but from what I can tell it's currently limited to only users with @google.com accounts, meaning Google employees.

External dictionary packs

Google Keyboard v1.1 adds support for adding external dictionary packs, which could mean two things:

  1. Updating existing language packs without requiring an app update (though I don't think this is the primary purpose of this function).
  2. More likely: loading additional language packs straight from the web. I'm guessing you will be able to load rare languages that don't ship by default this way, or maybe Google will even strip most languages in the future and make everything downloadable, which is exactly how SwiftKey behaves. This will slim down the APK quite a bit.

After digging around some, we found that Google has created a site that is currently hosting three external language packs for these locales: fa (Persian), in (Indonesian), and iw (Hebrew). Downloading these from the Android device pops up a dialog that lets you install the packs right from the browser. Here's what it all looks like:

<activity android:name="com.android.inputmethod.latin.debug.ExternalDictionaryReaderActivity">
??????????? <intent-filter>
??????????????? <action android:name="android.intent.action.VIEW" />
??????????????? <category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT" />
??????????????? <category android:name="android.intent.category.BROWSABLE" />
??????????????? <data android:scheme="https" android:host="sites.google.com" android:pathPrefix="/site/languagemodel" />
??? </intent-filter>
</activity>

Auto-space adjustment

Google tweaked the space behavior around punctuation slightly and removed the "*" character from both symbols_preceded_by_space and symbols_followed_by_space. These variables now have the following values:

<string name="symbols_preceded_by_space">([{&amp;</string>
<string name="symbols_followed_by_space">.,;:!?)]}&amp;</string>

XXHDPI support

A folder with xxhdpi drawables has been added to better support extra-extra-high-density screens (480dpi), such as the Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z, HTC One, Galaxy S4, etc.

New translation - Georgian

Google added a new translation language for the ka locale, which happens to be Georgian. Georgian looks absolutely crazy to me - it's probably the hardest to visually parse language I've ever seen.

Maybe new? Personal dictionary now separates languages and has the a For all languages section

This one is weird and I could only reproduce it on the Nexus 4. The Personal dictionary settings menu is now split into individual languages. There's also a global For all languages section that applies to everything. On all my other devices, there is no such separation, before or after the update. Weird.

Personal dictionary supports text expansion and is one of my favorite features of the Google Keyboard.

The Debug menu

The Debug mode has been in the app for a while now, but it's now gained a few options. It's activated by starting a hidden activity called Android keyboard debug settings (the easiest way is by using Nova Launcher -> Shortcuts -> Activities -> Google Keyboard).

Inside, we have several toggles: debug mode, enable user feedback, keyboard theme, force non-distinct multitouch, usability study mode, and read external dictionary file. The latter option gives us an alternative method of loading external dictionaries that I mentioned earlier.

The debug mode is more interesting. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to unlock much in the main app, but it does do one thing. See those tiny numbers and the + sign above suggestions? Those correspond to probability values and the "word missing - tapping it will add it to the personal dictionary," respectively. It's nothing groundbreaking, but it does offer us an interesting and rare insight into the prediction engine.

The other values are kind of boring. Oh yeah, the themes are still there (we've been able to change them for a few years now). There aren't any new ones, unfortunately, but I'll recap them all below anyway, for the unaware ones among you.

San Diego mayor resigns but remains defiant

The resignation speech given by San Diego Mayor Bob Filner reflected the same fiery, defiant tone that launched the political career of the former congressman and 1960s civil rights activist.

But Friday, Filner was giving his response after agreeing to step down as leader of the nation's eighth-largest city amid a flurry of sexual harassment allegations.

"Obviously this is the toughest decision of my life. You all know me to be a fighter," he said. "Unfortunately, on my own ? and you all helped cut off any support for that ? I can't afford to continue this battle even though I know, if given due process, I would be vindicated."

Filner apologized to the city and his accusers but also said his demise as San Diego's first Democratic mayor in decades was the result of "lynch mob mentality" and continued to deny his actions amounted to harassment.

Filner spoke after the City Council voted 7-0 on a deal that ended a political stalemate after 17 women publicly accused him of acting inappropriately from patting bottom to forcible kissing.

The agreement stipulated that Filner leave office by Aug. 30 in return for the city paying legal expenses related to a sexual harassment lawsuit brought by his former aide.

Filner blamed his downfall on his own shortcomings but also said those failures were used as "ammo" to stop a leader willing to shake up the city's power base, such as hoteliers and developers.

Filner evoked memories of his young adulthood, when he joined the Freedom Riders in their campaign against a segregated South and spent two months in a Mississippi jail for inciting a riot after he and others confronted an angry mob at a bus station.

"You know I started my career facing lynch mobs, and I think we have just faced one here in San Diego, and you're going to have deal with that," he said.

He said not one allegation has been proven independently or by a court, adding "I have never sexually harassed anyone."

Much of Filner's 15 minutes in the chambers sounded like a campaign stump speech. He trumpeted a five-year labor agreement with city unions, efforts to install solar panels on city buildings and clean up bird droppings at La Jolla's postcard beaches. He urged his successor to pursue a laundry list of initiatives from addressing climate change to bringing the Olympic Games to the region.

Filner had for weeks resisted calls to resign, and underwent two weeks of behavioral therapy before returning to work this week.

But his support diminished as more women ? including a university dean and a retired Navy admiral ? came forward and told stories of Filner touching, making lewd comments and even placing them in headlocks.

Peggy Shannon ? a great grandmother who said Filner would ask for dates and once took her hands and told her he could last eight hours at night ? found Filner's speech "hurtful."

"I know we've proven something ? because he is no longer mayor," she said. "So due process runs in different ways."

Under the agreement, the city will pay Filner's legal fees in a joint defense of the lawsuit filed by the mayor's former communications director, Irene McCormack Jackson, and pay for any settlement costs assessed against the mayor except for punitive damages, said City Attorney Jan Goldsmith. The city would also pay up to $98,000 if Filner wants to hire his own attorney.

Goldsmith said the city was obligated to provide his legal defense no matter what.

McCormack, as she is known professionally, claimed the mayor asked her to work without panties, demanded kisses, told her he wanted to see her naked and dragged her in a headlock while whispering in her ear.

She was the first one to publicly accuse the mayor.

"My thoughts are with the courageous women, who because they spoke out, galvanized the residents of this great city and its elected leaders to rise up against a serial sexual harasser and a gross abuser of power," McCormack said. "Bye-bye, Bob. You will not be missed."

Filner still faces a criminal investigation. Nicholas Pacilio, a spokesman for the California attorney general's office, confirmed after the mayor announced his resignation that an investigation was underway but declined to elaborate.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department is fielding complaints of sexual misconduct by the mayor and delivering its findings to the attorney general's office. San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis, who lost to Filner in last year's election, has recused herself.

When Filner's resignation takes effect, Todd Gloria, the Democratic City Council president, becomes acting mayor until a special election is held within 90 days. Democrats enjoy a solid edge over Republicans in voter registration, but the GOP will capitalize on the Filner debacle to try to reclaim an office it has held for nearly all of the last four decades.

Google adds touch-friendly features to the latest Chrome Canary test version

It looks like Google is now planning to add quite a few touch-friendly features to its Chrome browser. According to The Verge, while checking out the latest nightly Canary build, a new slide-to-navigate feature can now be seen on the browser. This new feature lets users swipe left or right to go backwards and forwards on Internet pages. This is similar to the same feature seen on Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 8.

Another feature that Google is reportedly working on is the pinch-to-zoom feature. This is available in an ?enable pinch scale? option in the Chrome Canary flags, according to the source report. While the feature is reportedly in a more experimental phase when compared to the swipe navigation, the former reportedly works as you would expect it to, by zooming in websites using your fingers. Google has also supported the onscreen keyboard fully in the desktop version of Windows 8 by displaying the same when the user reportedly taps the address bar or text boxes.

Google has added some touch-friendly features to Chrome Canary

?

The need for touch in Chrome has definitely grown after the launch of the native Chromebook Pixel as well as the increasing number of Windows 8 machines. Google released a ?Metro? version of Chrome for Windows 8 last year, but the version was mainly a container for Chrome as opposed to being a finger-friendly version. These new features may be minor in their application, but it can be expected that once they are out of the testing phase, they will definitely help make Chrome more user-friendly on the latest touch-enabled devices.??
