Foulest ads of the campaign season so far

Politically Foul

This week, the biggest foul was committed in the sports arena, not the political one. But that didn't stop candidates from trying to score a dubious touchdown or two.

The Romney campaign attacked President Obama for cutting billions of dollars from Medicare to pay for "Obamacare."

"You pay into Medicare for years, every paycheck. Now, when you need it, Obama cut $716 billion from Medicare," says a new ad from the Romney campaign.

Except the new healthcare law does not cut funds from Medicare. That $716 billion refers to the amount saved by reforming the future rate of growth -- affecting hospitals and health insurance companies, not seniors' benefits.

On the other side of the field, team Obama seized on the 47 percent comment Romney made at a May fundraiser, releasing?an ad claiming that Romney attacked veterans, elderly, and the disabled.

Aside from the fact that Romney himself has admitted to speaking "inelegantly" about the 47 percent of voters who he says won't support him, did he actually attack veterans and old people? No.

In Virginia, jogging moms have become the new soccer moms in an ad from a Virginia-based group hoping to score a few votes from women who voted for Obama in 2008.

"I run to forget, forget about my problems," says a mom running and pushing a baby carriage in the ad. "I voted for Obama, but 'Hope and Change' was just a slogan...the future is getting worse under Obama."

It's not as blatant as belting out, "I love you women!", but still, that's some painful pandering.

Comedian Sarah Silverman played offensive with a video attacking voter ID laws.

"Hey black people, old people, poor people, and students," Silverman?says. "Guess what you all have in common? Lawmakers are trying to --." We can't print what she says, but rest assured, the video sends a clear message that new laws are targeting Democratic demographics.

And, finally, it wouldn't be Politically Foul if we didn't have an outright fumble from Joe Biden. This week, with an assist from his wife.

"I've seen Joe up close," said Jill Biden as she introduced her husband at a campaign event at Dartmouth College. The audience erupted in guffaws, and the blushing Dr. Biden quickly pointed to her notes. "It's in my remarks!"

S'pore green building movement takes to the streets | Eco-Business ...

The green building industry needs green attitudes from occupants to be effective. Image: SIEW.

Green buildings may have risen in popularity in Singapore in the past few years, but such buildings are ?green? only if their users are too.

This is why the local green building movement is moving beyond physical walls to reach out to the man in the street, Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC) president Tai Lee Siang told Eco-Business in a recent interview.

Strong government leadership here has enabled building owners to adopt newfangled green technology to make their buildings more efficient. ?But the industry is mindful that if the people who occupy them do not have a ?green attitude? to conserving energy and resources, such buildings will not function well,? he said.

The SGBC, an industry association with more than 300 members, is thus focusing its efforts to include engaging the wider community, so that ?green lifestyles can complement green buildings to achieve greater results?, he said.

For example, SGBC is collaborating with technology giant IBM and the Ministry of Education on ?Project Green Insights?, which will raise awareness of energy efficiency with schools in Singapore. Education is important, said Mr Tai, as green attitudes are best adopted from a young age and the youth will become the future generation of building users.

SGBC?s industry members, such as property developers Lend Lease, are also developing green leases where tenants have to agree to certain environmental targets when they lease a retail space.

This focus on the community will be the main theme at this year?s upcoming International Green Building Conference (IGBC), organized by SGBC, which will feature activities that reach out to tenants, consumers and the youth.

To be held at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre from 10 to 12 October, the conference will convene more than 50 international experts from 25 countries to speak on green buildings and sustainable lifestyles.

National building regulator, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA), is also set to unveil new Green Mark schemes for big users of energy such as supermarkets, retailers and data centres at the conference.

The Green Mark is a system developed by the BCA to rate buildings on their environmental performance. Singapore currently has more than 1,200 Green Mark buildings.

Director of BCA?s technology development group, Mr Tan Tian Chong noted in statement that since its launch in 2005, the Green Mark scheme has ?provided a meaningful differentiation of buildings in the real estate market.?

?Indeed, a Green Mark building is internationally recognized as having best practices in environmental design and performance. This can have positive value-add for building owners as well as end-users as they will be living and working in energy-efficient, greener and healthier environments. We will extend the Green Mark scheme to new frontiers to make Singapore an even greener and healthier place,? he said.

BCA also plans to introduce a web-based carbon calculator that will help building professionals determine the footprint of major construction materials and energy used in buildings.

To ensure that the industry is held to high standards, the SGBC will announce at the conference a new Green Services Certification Scheme, which will cover related sectors such as architectural design, mechanical and electrical services, energy management and consultancy, and contractors.

It is an extension of an existing Green Building Product Certification, launched in 2010, which certifies green building products. SGBC has certified a total of 144 green products to date.

Mr Tai noted that products are only one aspect of what makes a building green. Service providers, who help create such buildings, are also important. ?So the new scheme will create a certain benchmark? on which these providers can be certified,? he said.

Some 10,000 people are expected to attend October?s conference. It will be held together with Bex Asia 2012, an annual regional building expo focusing on eco-friendly products and solutions. Both events are part of the annual Singapore Green Building Week.

Some notable figures due to speak include Professor Jacqueline Cramer, Director of Utrecht Sustainability Institute and former Minister of Housing, Social Planning and the Environment of the Netherlands, Ms Jane Henley, chief executive of the World Green Building Council and the founder of Earth Hour, Mr Andy Ridley.

Huawei Ascend P1 LTE named as EE exclusive in UK, other markets to follow

If you'd wondered what Huawei might bring to the table for the launch of the UK's newly-minted 4G network, your time is up, as the Ascend P1 LTE has been revealed as a national exclusive for EE, with availability in other markets to follow. Like its forebear, the handset features Android 4.0 alongside a dual-core 1.5GHz CPU, a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED qHD display and an 8-megapixel camera, although as a nice surprise, it'll also come with a beefier 2,000mAh battery. There's no word yet on pricing for the latest entrant, although it seems a safe assumption that all will be revealed in rather short order. In the meantime, you'll find the remaining details in the PR after the break.

Sharp says it's making enough iPhone 5 displays

2 hrs.

Sharp is making "adequate volumes" of displays it is known to supply for Apple's new iPhone5, a company executive said, indicating that a possible bottleneck in supplies of screens may have eased.

Analysts had blamed a shortfall in supplies of display for leaving Apple with too few iPhones to meet burgeoning demand at its launch this month.

At the end of Aug., three weeks before the new iPhone went on sale, Sharp, which was supposed to be mass producing at its Kameyama plant in central Japan, had fallen behind schedule, a source earlier told Reuters.

Sharp, the source said, was struggling to improve low production yields, raising the question of whether Apple would be prepared to sweeten financial incentives to secure an acceleration of production.

Apple also buys screens from Japan Display and Korea's LG Display.

Apple began offering the iPhone?5 on Sept. 21, selling over 5 million in the first three days, topping the iPhone 4S, which sold more than 4 million units in its first weekend. On the fourth day, Apple said it had run out of its initial supply and many pre-orders were scheduled to go out in Oct.

"The iPhone 5's 4-inch low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) touch-panel display with in-panel switching (IPS) is exceptionally difficult to produce at high yields," Deutsche Securities analyst Yasuo Nakane said in a report on Sept. 14.

Nakane estimates iPhone screen capacity at Japan Display and LG Display at eight million a month each, and at six million at Sharp. Displays for Apple's first lot of new iPhones likely came from only LG and Japan Display, Nakane added.

Sharp and Japan Display do not publicly admit to the relationship even though Apple, in a list of component makers published last year, identified both Japanese companies as suppliers.

The Sharp executive made the comment at a press briefing in Osaka, western Japan, speaking on condition he wasn't identified.?

Starting to snore during pregnancy could indicate risk for high blood pressure

Wednesday, September 26, 2012

Women who begin snoring during pregnancy are at strong risk for high blood pressure and preeclampsia, according to research from the University of Michigan.

The research, published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, showed pregnancy-onset snoring was strongly linked to gestational hypertension and preeclampsia, says lead author Louise O'Brien, Ph.D., associate professor in U-M's Sleep Disorders Center.

"We found that frequent snoring was playing a role in high blood pressure problems, even after we had accounted for other known risk factors," says O'Brien. "And we already know that high blood pressure in pregnancy, particularly preeclampsia, is associated with smaller babies, higher risks of pre-term birth or babies ending up in the ICU."

The study is believed to be the largest of its kind, with more than 1,700 participants. It is the first study to demonstrate that pregnancy-onset snoring confers significant risk to maternal cardiovascular health.

Habitual snoring, the hallmark symptom of sleep-disordered breathing, was defined as snoring three to four nights a week. About 25 percent of women started snoring frequently during pregnancy and this doubled the risk for high blood pressure compared to non-snoring women.

O'Brien writes that these results suggest that up to 19 percent of hypertensive disorders during pregnancy might be mitigated through treatment of any underlying sleep-disordered breathing.

Pregnant women can be treated for sleep-disordered breathing using CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure). It involves a machine, worn during sleep, that uses mild air pressure to keep the airways open. It is possible that use of CPAP may decrease high blood pressure in pregnant women, and O'Brien has such a study currently underway to test this hypothesis.

"Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are a leading global cause of maternal and infant deaths and cost billions of dollars annually to treat," O'Brien says.

"By asking pregnant women about snoring, especially in those with high blood pressure already, obstetric healthcare providers could identify women at high risk for sleep-disordered breathing and intervene during the pregnancy. This could result in better outcomes for mother and baby."

What Can You Afford: Benefit Versus Cost | Small Business Trends

Every camera is not equal. Neither is every computer, cell phone, printer, email marketing software or administrative assistant. And it would be easy to assume that a higher price tag means better quality (I had a sales person feed me that line recently). But experience teaches you to dig a little deeper.

photography shot

It?s not that you?re trying to be cheap. It?s just that the small business reality, especially in this economy, boils down to a few questions:

  1. Can you afford it?
  2. Can you afford to live without it?
  3. And if you cannot afford to live without, is this particular product or service your best way to get the benefit you want?

It?s not about having the latest and coolest BlackBerry, Android or iPhone, it?s about effectively and quickly communicating with your team in and out of the office. Bottom line behavior means labels come second to outcome.

In the small business setting, there is no room for fluff. Every purchase must deliver on core needs or it?s a waste and a shame.

What if you decide to add video marketing to your communication strategy? As you prepare to launch or update your YouTube page, you may discover a need (or desire) for a better camera and sound equipment.

Before the wallet hits the counter, you have to ask yourself, ?What do we really need?? Is the bargain basement version of the product or service enough, or is it too simplistic? Is the high-end, high-dollar option too much or just right?

Chances are:

  1. you aren?t filming for prime time television,
  2. you aren?t creating images for a full feature spread in National Geographic, and
  3. you aren?t recording for a nationally syndicated radio station.

Meaning you don?t need a two thousand dollar camera and four digit sound equipment. You probably need a product somewhere in the middle.

The same is true for most small business purchases. Do the research, because you can?t afford to pay for features that you?ll never use.

MD Anderson Shoots for the Moon on Cancer

In a dramatic announcement meant to raise the bar on cancer research and treatment, officials at MD Anderson Cancer Research Center in Houston say they'll launch an ambitious program early next year aimed at improving the survival rates of eight types of cancer and creating a new paradigm for speeding up all cancer research.

The medical center, long known for its excellence in cancer treatment, is calling the program "Moon Shots" to reflect the can-do spirit and dedication that enabled NASA's man-on-the-moon project in the 1960s.

"The Moon Shots program is not about the next experiment," Dr. Ronald DePinho, president of MD Anderson, said in a video on the center's Web site. "It's not about chipping away at the death rates year by year. It's about focusing our energies on every aspect of the cancer journey, from prevention to early diagnosis to treatment and survivorship."

MORE: Virus 'Kills' Cancer Cells

One in every two men and one in every three women will experience a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime, he noted.

A similarly devoted effort to eradicate cancer -- President Richard Nixon's 1971 War on Cancer -- had disappointing results. Since then, researchers have discovered cancer is a far more complex disease that requires a diverse arsenal of treatments individualized to each cancer and, to some extent, to each patient.

Now, however, advances in genetics and biotechnology have made the personalized model of cancer prevention and treatment a real possibility.

The infusion of funds, institutional support and a shared research infrastructure will help the Anderson teams develop new tests and treatments in record time, according to the center's leaders. In the past, most research teams operated independently, with their own organization and funding mechanisms. But that left many programs under-funded and too small to quickly adapt to emerging science.

MORE: Number of Cancer Survivors Likely to Grow Through 2022

A major aim of the Moon Shots program will be to improve the time it takes to move promising treatments from research labs into doctors' hands. Set to begin early next year, the project will initially target eight types of cancer:

Acute myeloid leukemia and myelodysplastic syndrome Chronic lymphocytic leukemia Lung cancer Melanoma Prostate cancer Triple-negative breast cancer and ovarian cancer

These eight diseases, assigned to six research teams, were chosen because they're most likely to produce fast, measurable gains in patient care and survivorship. Much is already known about the prevention and treatment of these eight illnesses, and MD Anderson's staff includes top experts on those diseases, DePinho says.

MORE: Use of Weed Linked to Higher Risk of Testicular Cancer

"The reason that (chronic lymphocytic leukemia) ?is a great candidate for these new initiatives is that it's very easy for us to access the malignant cells because they're in the bloodstream" Dr. Michael Keating said. Keating, a professor specializing in leukemia at MD Anderson, added, "That enables us to analyze the genetics of the disease in great detail."

Several immune-system and drug treatments already exist for CLL. Likewise, emerging research has provided clues to understanding how melanoma arises, said Dr. Jeffrey Gershenwald, a professor of surgical oncology at MD Anderson.

"There's been a rapid understanding of the molecular underpinnings of melanoma," he said. "What we'd like to do is increase survival from less than two years for most patients with advanced melanoma to three to five years."

MORE: Cancer Rates Steadily Falling

The program's goals are bold. The team working on breast and ovarian cancer -- up to 175 Anderson faculty members from more than 15 departments -- said it hopes within five years to be able to find reliable methods to diagnose ovarian cancer at an early, curable stage. Because ovarian cancer produces few symptoms in its earliest phases, many women already have advanced disease by the time they're diagnosed. A test to detect ovarian cancer earlier, such as a blood test, has long eluded researchers around the world.

Although eight cancers will be assigned to the Moon Shots program, research into other forms of cancer will not suffer, DePinho said, adding: "What we learn with these first Moon Shots programs will advance our knowledge to all other cancers."

The first 10 years of the Moon Shots program will cost an estimated $3 billion, which will come from institutional earnings and commercialization of new products, research grants and philanthropy.

Do you think that another version of the war on cancer can result in bigger gains this time around?

Iran denies hacking into American banks

1 hr.

DUBAI ??Iran denied its hackers attacked American banks, the semi-official Fars news agency reported on Sunday, following a Reuters report that three of the largest American lenders were repeatedly targeted over the past year.

The hacking of websites and corporate networks at Bank of America Corp, JPMorgan Chase & Co and Citigroup Inc began in late 2011 and escalated this year, people familiar with the situation told Reuters.

"We officially announce that we haven't had any attacks," Head of Iran's civil defence agency Gholam Reza Jalali told Fars, when asked about the report.

Reuters reported the hackers targeted the three banks in retaliation for their enforcement of Western economic sanctions against Iran's disputed nuclear program.

Iran says the program is aimed at generating electricity and not, as the United States, Israel and others allege, at making nuclear weapons. A senior Iranian lawmaker accused the head of the United Nations nuclear watchdog on Sunday of passing confidential information about Iran's nuclear activities to Israel.

Related story:?Officials see Iran, not outrage over film, behind cyber attacks on US banks

The Islamic state has beefed up its cyber capabilities after the nuclear programme came under attack in 2010 by the Stuxnet computer worm which caused centrifuges to fail at its main enrichment facility.

Tehran accused the United States and Israel of deploying Stuxnet.

Intelligence Minister Heydar Moslehi said in June that Iran had detected a planned "massive cyber attack" against its nuclear facilities, blaming the United States, Israel and Britain.

Jalali said Stuxnet was used against Iran to delay the country's nuclear activities.

"But we see that our activities are successfully continuing ... Our nuclear systems are now immune to such things," Jalali said, according to Fars.

Security experts say Iran's cyber capabilities are not as sophisticated as those of China, Russia, the United States or many of its Western allies.?

17 Chinese trapped in 2 coal mine accidents

BEIJING Chinese state media say two coal mine accidents have trapped 17 people underground.

The official Xinhua News Agency says a fire broke out Sunday in a mine in northeast Heilongjiang province, trapping 11. Two other people working in the mine were lifted out.

Xinhua says the mine's operating license had expired three weeks earlier and the county government is blaming illegal production for the accident.

Another mine in the same province was flooded on Saturday, trapping six miners.

Rescue efforts are under way.

China has the world's deadliest coal mining industry. Safety improvements have reduced deaths in recent years, but safety rules are often ignored and accidents are still common.

Organizing Made Fun: Organizing Craft Supplies: My craft cupboard!

My Craft Cupboard has been a labor of love! Yes, I use it, but my daughter is so happy to have all the craft supplies easy to get to and easy to put away.

Remember, I showed you the whole thing a couple of weeks ago? Well, I want to give you an up close view of all the organizing that's happening.?

I'll start in the bottom of my cupboard with these Smart Store containers that I found at The Container Store. Before I began searching for my containers, I had my stuff everywhere trying to figure out what exactly I needed to store and how to store it. I also wanted to add to our cupboard to make it functional and fun with all kinds of crafting tools and things. I measured out my cupboard - because it is an odd size. I had gotten an advertisement from The Container Store showing a bunch of their organizing stuff on sale along with these containers. I saw the sizes and measured everything.
When I got to the store, I could see they were going to fit perfectly with my idea. It's one larger container, and then you can put whatever sized containers INSIDE this one container.?

Each container comes out and is labeled so everything is easy to put away. And, truly, my daughter and her friends use the cupboard and love it - and they really DO put everything away where it belongs. I've been really happy about that, as I was trying to make it that way.

So, my other container is similar, but it's smaller/shorter. My "craft fun" labeled container just has all kinds of odds and ends in it.?

My Cricut has it's container to hold the few items that I've begun to accumulate, with the ability to add more. The top of it has this tray that pulls out and I have a few things that aren't necessarily Cricut {sorry, but they didn't fit anywhere else}.?

Underneath the pull out tray is where I put my main Cricut supplies - I know it's very little, but I mostly use it for labeling and not scrapbooking. But, I make a lot of great labels so I'm hoping to get more "font" cartridges that I like.

Above the bottom cupboard is open storage. I have a parts organizer that I got HERE. It only came in black so I spray painted it white. It is perfect for organizing stamps and stamp pad and some punches that I have.?

Behind the parts organizer is a small paper trimmer that I have stuck to the wall with the Command velcro strips {so they are hidden}. The hole in the wall is from the past intercom system that I talked about in my last post.

To the side of the parts' organizer are mason jars filled with gel pens.

I also used an old nut container {that's why there is a "used by" date} to hold string and thread for various projects.

Above that is what I came up with to hold all kinds of ribbons, washi tape, butcher paper, vinyl rolls by using wooden dowels {painted white}.

We used closet rod holders to hold the dowels and be able to take them off and put them on.

The beads were a lot of work - but I decided to sort them in a parts organizer that I sat down and sorted in front of the TV one afternoon. It makes it easier for making jewelry to have it sorted by color and type.?

Above that part of the cupboard is my seagrass baskets from Ikea that hold specialty scrapbook paper and vinyl rolls. I like the baskets because they add a lot of texture to the cupboard area and give it personality.?

I will say that they aren't perfect - having them up high and the way they are constructed makes it awkward to get them down without the bottom of the basket coming out. Fortunately, I don't get in them all the time so it's not horrible problem for me, but may bug someone else.?

My existing Ikea chairs got a little facelift with a cheery matching pillow. We sit in these at the table in the corner and do our crafts.?

So you see, this area was a challenge for me. It spent weeks just a mess, with everything out on the table. I wanted to get a good idea what stuff I really needed, so I measured, took my time, and worked a little at a time. Organizing isn't about rushing to get it done. If we do that, it probably won't function how it should or it will go back to the way things were. By labeling, sorting, measuring, and making sure I get the right tools for the job, it now functions like I had planned! Do you have a great way you organize your craft supplies?

TDK's Wireless Charging Cube pumps out the jams, juices your Qi devices and resists water

Although TDK mentioned its Wireless Charging Cube at IFA with the rest of its latest portable audio wares, it wasn't until today that we got a look at the speaker. The six by six by six-inch (yes, you read that right) unit features the same retro, black and gold aesthetic as TDKs other Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR speakers, but it's notably housing a Qi-compatible inductive charging base at the top (just like JBL's Lumia-styled Power Up speakers). Along with being splash-resistant enough to stay safely within range of your sink, an internal rechargeable battery will net you roughly six to eight hours of untethered play time. We had a very brief ears-on with this $400 unit, so join us past the break for more details and our initial impressions.

New turtle tracking technique may aid efforts to save loggerhead

ScienceDaily (Sep. 20, 2012) ? The old adage "you are what you eat" is helping scientists better understand the threatened loggerhead turtle, which is the primary nester on Central Florida's beaches.

A study published September 21 in the journal PLoS ONE describes how scientists at the University of Central Florida used a technique that links chemical signatures of the turtles' diets and their watery environments to their migratory routes. They found the technique just as effective as expensive satellite tracking.

Little is known about the turtles, which spend 99 percent of their time in the water and return to the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge's beach to nest once every two to three years. The 13-mile-long beach is home to the second-largest population of loggerheads in the world and to about one of every four nests those turtles lay in the United States.

While other turtles' nests are increasing along the refuge's shores, the loggerheads' have been declining since 2000. The technique validated by the UCF scientists could help managers preserve the turtles' nesting grounds, migration routes and foraging grounds, all of which are critical to their survival.

"We need good information so policy makers can focus the limited conservation funds available where they can make the greatest impact," said Simona Ceriani, the UCF graduate student who led the study. "We all want our children to see these beautiful creatures and not just read about them in a book."

In addition to validating the tracking technique, the study found that the foraging area for the Florida turtles is much broader than previously thought.

"Think of these turtles as Florida tourists and snowbirds," Ceriani said. "They come and nest and then go back to lots of different places. And while we knew some went back north, we had no idea that this was a popular destination."

Based on her tracking, some turtles head for the water off the shores of Virginia and Delaware while others go to the Bahamas and the Gulf of Mexico. Some stay off the coast of Central Florida's beaches. Previously, scientists believed the majority of the loggerheads headed south.

While there are efforts to protect the turtle nests on the beaches, protecting their foraging grounds is equally important, biologists say. Many turtles die because they accidently get caught in fishing nets or encounter other dangers while out at sea.

The technique Ceriani validated should aid those efforts.

She took small blood samples from turtles at the refuge and completed a chemical analysis, which measured distinct markers known as stable isotopes. She also attached transmitters to the turtles so she could follow them using the more expensive but proven satellite tracking technique. The isotope approach proved to be equally useful, and it is much less expensive.

"By combining isotope research with satellite tracking technology, we are learning exciting information about loggerhead sea turtles," said Daniel R. Evans, a research specialist at the Sea Turtle Conservancy and co-author of the research paper. "This research helps scientists and conservation managers identify key feeding areas for loggerhead turtles and helps direct policy and regulations that protect sea turtles in these specific areas."

Ceriani said she will continue to research the migratory routes by adding more loggerheads to the study.

Ceriani earned her bachelor's degree at the University of Milan in Italy and was a research fellow at Florida Atlantic University before joining UCF's PhD program in conservation biology in 2007.

Others who contributed to the study include: UCF Biologist, John Weishampel, James D. Roth from the University of Manitoba in Canada and Llewellyn M. Ehrhart from the Marine Turtle Research Group at UCF.

Several grants from Florida's Sea Turtle Grants Program funded this study. The program gets is funding from the sale of the Florida Sea Turtle License Plate.

Experiment corrects prediction in quantum theory

ScienceDaily (Sep. 19, 2012) ? An international team of scientists is rewriting a page from the quantum physics rulebook using a University of Florida laboratory once dubbed the coldest spot in the universe.

Much of what we know about quantum mechanics is theoretical and tested via computer modeling because quantum systems, like electrons whizzing around the nucleus of an atom, are difficult to pin down for observation. One can, however, slow particles down and catch them in the quantum act by subjecting them to extremely cold temperatures. New research, published in the Sept. 20 edition of the journal Nature, describes how this freeze-frame approach was recently used to overturn an accepted rule of thumb in quantum theory.

"We are in the age of quantum mechanics," said Neil Sullivan, a UF physics professor and director of the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory High B/T Facility on the UF campus -- home of the Microkelvin lab where experiments can be conducted in near-absolute zero temperatures. "If you've had an MRI, you have made use of a quantum technology."

The magnet that powers an MRI scanner is a superconducting coil transformed into a quantum state by very cold liquid helium. Inside the coil, electric current flows friction free.

Quantum magnets and other strange, almost otherworldly occurrences in quantum mechanics could inspire the next big breakthroughs in computing, alternative energy and transportation technologies such as magnetic levitating trains, Sullivan said. But innovation cannot proceed without a proper set of guidelines to help engineers navigate the quantum road.

That's where the Microkelvin lab comes in. It is one of the few facilities in the world equipped to deliver the extremely cold temperatures needed to slow what Sullivan calls the "higgledy-piggledy" world of quantum systems at normal temperatures to a manageable pace where it can be observed and manipulated.

"Room temperature is approximately 300 kelvin," Sullivan said. "Liquid hydrogen pumped into a rocket at the Kennedy Space Center is at 20 kelvin."

Physicists need to cool things down to 1 millikelvin, one thousandth of a kelvin above absolute zero, or -459.67 degrees Fahrenheit, to bring matter into a different realm where quantum properties can be explored.

One fundamental state of quantum mechanics that scientists are keen to understand more fully is a fragile, ephemeral phase of matter called a Bose-Einstein Condensate. In this state, individual particles that make up a material begin to act as a single coherent unit. It's a tricky condition to induce in a laboratory setting, but one that researchers need to explore if technology is ever to fully exploit the properties of the quantum world.

Two theorists, Tommaso Roscilde at the University of Lyon, France, and Rong Yu from Rice University in Houston, developed the underlying ideas for the study and asked a colleague, Armando Paduan-Filho from the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil, to engineer the crystalline sample used in the experiment.

"Our measurements definitively tested an important prediction about a particular behavior in a Bose-Einstein Condensate," said Vivien Zapf, a staff scientist at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory at Los Alamos and a driving force behind the international collaboration.

The experiment monitored the atomic spin of subatomic particles called bosons in the crystal to see when the transition to Bose-Einstein Condensate was achieved, and then further cooled the sample to document the exact point where the condensate properties decayed. They observed the anticipated phenomenon when they took the sample down to 1 millikelvin.

The crystal used in the experiment had been doped with impurities in an effort to create more of a real world scenario, Zapf said. "It's nice to know what happens in pure samples, but the real world, is messy and we need to know what the quantum rules are in those situations."

Having performed a series of simulations in advance, they knew that the experiment would require them to generate temperatures down to 1 millikelvin.

"You have to go to the Microkelvin Laboratory at UF for that," she said. The lab is housed within the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory High B/T Facility at UF, funded by the National Science Foundation. Other laboratories can get to the extreme temperature required, but none of them can sustain it long enough to collect all of the data needed for the experiment.

"It took six months to get the readings," said Liang Yin, an assistant scientist in the UF physics department who operated the equipment in the Microkelvin lab. "Because the magnetic field we used to control the wave intensity in the sample also heats it up. You have to adjust it very slowly."

Their findings literally rewrote the rule for predicting the conditions under which the transition would occur between the two quantum states.

"All the world should be watching what happens as we uncover properties of systems at these extremely low temperatures," Sullivan said. "A superconducting wire is superconducting because of this Bose-Einstein Condensation concept. If we are ever to capitalize on it for quantum computing or magnetic levitation for trains, we have to thoroughly understand it."

Carl Rinsch Reportedly Removed from 47 Ronin

47-ronin-cast-keanu reeves carl rinsch

47 Ronin is an intriguing project, in part because Universal plucked Carl Rinsch from relative obscurity to direct the 3D samurai tentpole.? It seems the studio regrets that decision, and wants to heighten the intrigue in all the worst ways a cinephile can imagine.? Rinsch has reportedly been removed from the editing room; Universal co-chairwoman Donna Langley will oversee the final cut.? A source involved with the production said the budget escalated from the planned $175 million to a prohibitive $225 million, although the studio denies that number.? Keanu Reeves stars as one of the 18th century samurai who seek to avenge their master?s death, which lends some star power to the movie.? But the rest of the cast?featuring Hiroyuki Sanada, Tadanobu Asano, K? Shibasaki, and Rinko Kikuchi?is mostly Japanese.? [Edit: To clarify, I have no problem with the nationality of the other actors. See explanation in the comments.]? Add in the period setting and the lack of built-in brand awareness, and it is surprising Universal trusted an unproven director with so much money in the first place.

But Universal is ready to rectify that.? Find out how after the jump.

47-Ronin-movie-posterThe Wrap suggests that Rinsch came off as ?creative and competent? during pre-production, but struggled when shooting got underway and eventually ?buckled under the pressure of the ambitious shoot.?? Rinsch oversaw reshoots in London as recently as a week ago at the request of the studio.? Reeves? character Kai was initially absent from the final battle scene.? With the reshoots, the climax now pits Kai against a supernatural creature.? The studio also ?added a love scene, close-ups, and individual lines? to boost Reeves? screen time.

Clearly, Universal was not happy with the footage that Rinsch had assembled and had already taken over the production in spirit.? The studio apparently would have fired Rinsch earlier if not for a DGA regulation that insists that the director of the initial production must also be involved with the reshoots.? Now that the reshoots are in the can, the studio feels free to seize control from Rinsch more definitively.? To reduce costs, Universal has reportedly halted some of the visual effects work.

It is unfortunate that things devolved to this state, because again, it was such an exciting prospect.? Now? it?s hard to root for a studio takeover, and even more difficult to believe that such a troubled process will yield a whole and satisfying final product.? Until the planned Christmas 2013 release, we can hope that this conflict is overstated, or at the very least that cool elements will seep through the mess.

Targeting Childhood Obesity EarlyYour Health Journal | Your Health ...

From The Harvard Gazette?..

This is the second installment in a three-part Harvard Medical School series on childhood obesity.

With childhood obesity now affecting 17 percent of American children, the nation is rallying around the concept that serious action is required. In 2010, President Barack Obama established the first Task Force on Childhood Obesity, aimed at reducing the rate of such obesity to just 5 percent by 2030.

Although many of the plan?s 70 recommendations focus on approaches such as improving access to healthy, affordable foods; increasing physical activity; and empowering parents to make smart nutrition choices, a large chapter of the report is dedicated to reducing the risk of childhood obesity early in life. Since the president released his Task Force Call to Action, two Institute of Medicine (IOM) reports have emphasized the need for early interventions to prevent obesity.

That?s welcome news to researchers like Matthew Gillman, Elsie Taveras (who is a member of the IOM Committee on Early Childhood Obesity Prevention Policies), and their colleagues at Project Viva, a longitudinal research study that examines a woman?s lifestyle and other factors during pregnancy and, after birth, the effects on her health and the health of her child.

Taveras is an associate professor of population medicine and pediatrics and co-director of the Obesity Prevention Program at Harvard Medical School?s (HMS) Department of Population Medicine. Gilman is a professor and director of the program.

Since 1998, the project has studied thousands of expectant mothers and their children, including more than 1,110 visits with 7-year-olds. Thanks in large part to Project Viva?s findings, a growing body of evidence has found that childhood obesity begins in utero, and early intervention can go a long way toward quelling the problem.

Attractive names sustain increased vegetable intake in schools

ScienceDaily (Sep. 17, 2012) ? Would you rather eat "carrots" or "crunchy yummy carrots"? Or, if you're a youngster, "X-Ray Vision Carrots"? Kids seem to have an aversion to eating vegetables, but can this be changed?

Previous work conducted by Wansink et al., in 2005 revealed that sensory perceptions of descriptive foods are better than plain dishes with no fancy descriptors. But can children be influenced to prefer vegetables using this same approach? To find out, researchers Brian Wansink, David Just, Collin Payne, and Matthew Klinger conducted a couple of studies to explore whether a simple change such as using attractive names would influence kid's consumption of vegetables.

Name that food

In the first study, plain old carrots were transformed into "X-ray Vision Carrots." 147 students ranging from 8-11 years old from 5 ethnically and economically diverse schools participated in tasting the cool new foods. Lunchroom menus were the same except that carrots were added on three consecutive days. On the first and last days, carrots remained unnamed. On the second day, the carrots were served as either "X-ray Vision Carrots" or "Food of the Day." Although the amount of carrots selected was not impacted by the 3 different naming conditions the amount eaten was very much so. By changing the carrots to "X-ray vision carrots," a whopping 66% were eaten, far greater than the 32% eaten when labeled "Food of the Day" and 35% eaten when unnamed. The success of the changes is stupendous, and the fun, low cost nature of the change makes it all the more enticing.

20/20 Interview Clip

In the second study, carrots became "X-Ray vision carrots," broccoli did a hulk like morph into "Power Punch Broccoli" along with "Tiny Tasty Tree Tops" and "Silly Dilly Green Beans" replaced regular old green beans to give them more pizzazz. Researchers looked at food sales over two months in two neighboring NYC suburban schools. For the first month, both schools offered unnamed food items, while on the second month carrots, broccoli and green beans were given the more attractive names, only in one of the schools (the treatment school.) Of the 1,552 students involved 47.8% attended the treatment school. The results were outstanding: vegetable purchases went up by 99% in the treatment school, while in the other school vegetable sales declined by 16%.

These results demonstrate that using attractive names for healthy foods increases kid's selection and consumption of these foods and that an attractive name intervention is robust, effective and scalable at little or no cost. Very importantly, these studies confirm that using attractive names to make foods sound more appealing works on individuals across all age levels.

(AP) ? Three compelling fights in the past eight years still haven't resolved the rivalry between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez.

So they're stepping in the ring together for a fourth bout on Dec. 8 in Las Vegas.

And this time, they're both looking for knockouts.

Pacquiao and Marquez fought to a draw in 2004, and Pacquiao won by decision in 2008 and again last year. Marquez and many fans still believe he won all three fights, while Pacquiao says he clearly won the last two.

Marquez says the only way to be sure he'll finally get his hand raised is to stop the Filipino congressman.

Coming off his first loss since 2005, Pacquiao says he's going back to the ferocious, brawling style that made him an eight-division champion.
