As you give your labor at the way of retail arena so you?re not to go ahead. The marketing is classy and each sale lead is generated essentially 70USD per lead frightened right at trash. Though 70USD per lead?? How to come along with number you may be asking for. Actually at this business we know which we spend 210USD per closed lead. That is the reason we say to market is very exclusive, to know that we?ve spent that?s based in 30% ratio of closing too. Thus we told none usually. Generally, as our price is accurate above otherwise the way above additional contractors.

Rebar detailing is one of the most promising methods in commercial and residential construction Industry at current scenario. And as we all know that in swiftly growing of steel construction industry, it is necessary for any builder, contractor or structural engineer to know the importance of rebar detailing. Discovery of new white blood cell reveals target for better vaccine design

Monday, July 30, 2012

Researchers in Newcastle and Singapore have identified a new type of white blood cell which activates a killing immune response to an external source ? providing a new potential target for vaccines for conditions such as cancer or Hepatitis B.

Publishing in the journal Immunity, the team of researchers from Newcastle University in collaboration with A*STAR's Singapore Immunology Network (SIgN) describe a new human tissue dendritic cell with cross-presenting function.

Dendritic cells (DCs) are a type of white blood cell that orchestrate our body's immune responses to infectious agents such as bacteria and viruses, as well as cancer cells. They are also very important for eliciting the immune response generated by vaccines.

DCs kick start an immune response by presenting small fragments of molecules from micro-organisms such as bacteria and viruses, or from vaccines or tumours, called antigens on their surface. This leads to activation of another white blood cell subset called T cells, which specialise in killing cells and are crucial for eliminating cancerous or infected cells. Most cells are only able to present antigens from within themselves, and so will only elicit an immune response if they are infected themselves. Only a specialised subset of DCs is able to generate a response to an external source of antigen, for example bacteria, vaccines and tumours.

The identity of human tissue DCs that are capable of presenting external antigen to activate the cell-killing response by T cells - a process termed 'cross-presentation' - has remained a mystery. Their discovery, as revealed by this research, will help scientists to design better targeted vaccine strategies to treat cancer and infections such as Hepatitis B.

"These are the cells we need to be targeting for anti-cancer vaccines," said Dr Muzlifah Haniffa, a Wellcome Trust Intermediate Fellow and Senior Clinical Lecturer at Newcastle University. "Our discovery offers an accessible, easily targetable system which makes the most of the natural ability of the cell."

The researchers also showed for the first time that dendritic cell subsets are conserved between species and have in effect created a map, facilitating the translation of mouse studies to the human immune system.

"The cross-species map is in effect a Rosetta stone that deciphers the language of mouse into human", explains Matthew Collin, Professor of Haematology from Newcastle University.

In the paper the researchers describe how the cross-presenting DCs were first isolated from surplus plastic surgery skin which was digested to melt the gelatinous collagen to isolate the cells.

This research will have significant impact on the design of vaccines and other targeted immunotherapies.

The Rosetta Stone of our immune system: Mapping Human and Mouse dendritic cells

The Newcastle University team in collaboration with A*STAR's Singapore Immunology Network (SIgN) have for the first time ever aligned the dendritic cell subsets between mouse and humans allowing the accurate translation of mouse studies into the human model for the first time.

The researchers isolated the dendritic cells from human blood and skin and those from mouse blood, lung and liver. Using gene expression analysis, they identified gene signatures for each human dendritic cell subset. Mouse orthologues of these genes were identified and a computational analysis was performed to match subsets across species.

This provides scientists for the first time with an accurate model to compare DCs between species.

Professor Matthew Collin explains: "This is in effect a Rosetta stone that deciphers the language of mouse into human. It can put into context the findings from the extensive literature using mouse models to the human settings".

Dr. Haniffa added: "These gene signatures are available in a public repository accessible for all researchers to benefit from the data. It will allow detailed knowledge of individual human dendritic cell subsets to enable specific targeting of these cells for therapeutic strategy."

Anyone who knows anything about evolution disagrees with you. Or medicine for that matter. If you were qualified to safely decide what drugs you could stick in your body, in what doses, and for how long we wouldn't need pharmacists, or doctors.

People with your attitude have been deciding they feel better and no longer need to take medications have been breeding drug resistant diseases. Thanks. Just what we needed.

But that takes us to your second point.

Farmers Branch schedules special session Thursday on litigation ...

?

? The nearly six-year-old crusade over illegal immigration in Farmers Branch?is up for public discussion this Thursday evening at 6 p.m. The City Council has called a special meeting at that time to discuss federal and state litigation involving the renter?s ordinance on illegal immigration.

? The meeting may include possible action on the federal lawsuit, Villas at Parkside Partners, et. al. v City of Farmers Branch, now before the Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, according to?a?notice by the city. That?s the case where various judges have called the city?s ordinance unconstitutional, arguing enforcement of federal immigration law is the responsibility of the federal government and not the city?s building inspectors.

? Farmers Branch has persistently argued to the contrary, with the legal assistance of Kris Kobach, the current Kansas secretary of state. Kobach has also worked with the legal affiliate to the Federation for American Immigration Reform. The latter group argues for restrictions in both legal and illegal immigration.

?? After a three-judge panel largely ruled against the suburb of 29,000, Farmers Branch filed a request for a rehearing before the full court.

???A few weeks later, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a landmark ruling?on June 25th?that struck down three-fourths of a tough 2010 Arizona state law cracking down on illegal immigration. The high court allowed one key section to stand, saying federal law didn?t pre-empt the state?s ability to have local police check the immigration status of people they detain.

?? The second lawsuit under Thursday discussion?was brought by Guillermo Ramos who alleges city officials violated the Texas Open Meetings Act when they crafted one of the ordinances. Please note: That lawsuit is scheduled for a Friday trial in the 116th judicial district court.

?? The city has spent about $5 million defending its legal position, according to the city?s finance director. At least another $2 million in legal bills is still pending.

Facebook shares spook investors now. But long term?

Facebook shares reach lowest level ever as revenue growth slows and investors cash out. Analysts are more upbeat about the potential for Facebook shares.

By Barbara Ortutay,?AP Technology Writer / July 28, 2012

In this May file photo, the Facebook logo is displayed on an iPad in Philadelphia. Facebook's stock hit a new low Friday, after it reported second-quarter results that disappointed investors. The stock is now about 39 percent below its IPO price.

Investors are dumping?Facebook's?stock, spooked by slowing revenue growth, the lack of a financial outlook and plans to spend more money in the coming months.

Are they right?

Only if they are thinking in the short term. Investors can expect?Facebook's?stock to be volatile for a few years. But analysts say those willing to wait will likely be rewarded ? someday.

"I view it as a tomorrow stock," says Christian Bertelsen, chief investment officer at wealth management firm Global Financial Private Capital.

"The whole thing on?Facebook?is, look, if your time horizon is hourly, weekly or even monthly, this is not the stock for you," he adds. "You need to take a much longer-term view on it."

That's about three or four years, he says.

Founded in CEO Mark Zuckerberg's Harvard dorm room in 2004,?Facebook?was a product of the PC era. Now, in the age of mobile computing, a growing number of people are accessing?Facebook?through their iPhones, Android gadgets and tablet computers. Yet?Facebook?is only now starting to figure out how to make money from its mobile audience.

"The company is going through an almost painful transition from desktop to mobile," Baird analyst Colin Sebastian says.

He calls?Facebook?"a speculative investment," but one with plenty of potential.

"With almost one billion users,?Facebook?is amassing the most comprehensive user profile database in existence," Sebastian says. This, he adds, offers a "significant opportunity" to reap a big chunk of the global advertising market, which is currently at $500 billion a year.

"Amazon comes to mind immediately," Bertelsen says.

After that company went public in 1997, at the time mainly just an online bookstore, critics were quick to cry dot-com bust, call its business a broken, and so on. Today, it is the world's biggest online retailer, selling everything from DVDs to vacuum cleaners to Web storage.

"Now they are the retailer to the world," he adds.

Amazon.com Inc.'s stock price grew to more than $200 a share, from less than $2. Of course,?Facebook?has started out much higher, at $38.

Facebook's?first earnings report since its rocky initial public offering on May 18 was the second coming that didn't quite materialize. So investors sent?Facebook's?stock to its lowest level ever on Friday. Shares fell $3.14, or nearly 12 percent, to close at $23.71 after hitting $22.28 in the morning. The previous low was $25.52, reached on June 6.

The stock dropped despite the fact that?Facebook's?second-quarter results met Wall Street's expectations, with revenue one-third higher than last year.

Given the rocky economy and investors' heightened sensitivity to a stock's value, betting on a company becomes a "show-me story" for many of them, Sebastian says. That means investors want proof rather thanFacebook's?word that it can grow its revenue and make a profit.

Skip on Blogs! Get Help! ? Coffee Addict

I really wanted to keep this off the internet, but I?m sorry, I can?t!

This morning I received an email from a young girl (14) saying she was binging and purging every day and didn?t know why.? She was reading some recovery blogs on the internet and one (very well known for me) was saying that she was just WEAK! This lady kept telling her to manage her bulimia by not keeping any ?bad? foods in the house, to eat ?good? food so she won?t want to purge. The solution to her problem was ?that easy.?

Now she?s not only terrified about her inability to stop binging and purging.? She also feels stupid, incompetent, lost and confused.? Since she is financially dependent on her parents, she is afraid and ashamed to tell them about her eating disorder. If you can identify with her this post is for you.

Binging and purging are symptoms of the eating disorder, bulimia.? Without treatment it will get worse. It?s an illness, not a character flaw. You need a mental health professional who understands and has specific experience with eating disorders.

To anyone who isn?t?bulimic or doesn?t have knowledge about eating disorders or says just to stop doing it, binging and purging doesn?t make sense.

But when you suffer from bulimia you throw up for reasons. Maybe you don?t know or understand what those reasons are.? And the only way you can explain them is by saying, ?I can?t stop myself.?? ?I don?t want to stop.? ?I promise myself that I will stop.?? ?This is the last time I will ever do this.?

To a mental health professional who understands eating disorders these responses do make sense. When you have bulimia usually you are not eating because you hungry.? In fact, when you know you are hungry and eat for that reason it?s a developmental milestone on your recovery journey.

Sometimes you eat just so you can throw up.? Some people feel soothed by the binge until it hurts too much so they throw up so they can binge again.? But some people need to binge so they can throw up because it?s the throwing up that brings some relief from anxiety.

Also I can?t forbid, but only ask to be careful while reading recovery blogs. Bloggers usually aren?t professionals so they may harm more than help (including myself).

Finding and developing a solid, trusting, mutually appreciating relationship with your psychotherapist is crucial in moving toward recovery.

If you are young and living with your parents or financially dependent on them because you are in school or in an early career stage, you need to tell them what is going on with you.? You need to let them help you help yourself.

Bulimia is an illness.? You don?t recover through will power just as you don?t recover from pneumonia through will power.? You need caring and appropriate healing work with a professional who knows about eating disorders and who respects you and what you are going through.

The girl I?m writing here about is aware of me publishing this openly and she will be reading.

Have you had difficulty in asking for help? Please share.

xoxo

Healthy Fare to your Wedding Reception | articlereference.net

Whether your wedding reception is getting held at a ritzy hotel or a neighborhood park, there?s no reason why you can?t serve healthy foods that will nourish and satisfy your guests. If you?re planning to begin a new life as being a married couple using a healthy mind/body/spirit perspective, why not begin on your wedding day?

Traditional wedding fare in venues like hotels and restaurants commonly includes boring chicken dishes with overcooked vegetables, a barely-identifiable starch merchandise and also a lot of sugar. Mass-produced meals is par to your course when you work with institutional kitchens, but using a little creative considering (and a willingness to spend more on your food budget), you can create a beautiful, healthy repast to your wedding feast.

Some of one?s menu selections will vary depending on a time of day your wedding takes place. It?s is more affordable ? and correct ? to serve lighter, healthier foods for your morning or afternoon wedding in which a lavish meal isn?t expected. For lunch, start having a large salad that contains different vegetables (the a lot more live, green stuff on a plate, the healthier the meal will be), and in case you must include bread, pick a thing with whole grains rather than lifeless white rolls. To your primary course, pick a vegetable-heavy pasta dish, a skinless chicken breast or a salmon filet (this works for dinner too). Of course there is going to be wedding cake following the meal, so take into account serving smaller slices of cake accompanied by some fresh fruit.

In terms of beverages, it?s effortless (and significantly cheaper) to serve iced tea and bottled water rather than sodas and sugary juices. Naturally, individuals will expect alcohol, but you?ll be able to save lots of money but providing only beer and wine rather than an open bar.

You will discover that hotels, restaurants and caterers will usually be content to customize their menus for you, so don?t be afraid to request exactly what you want. Even if your guests occur away grumbling about having to consume ?health food? when they expected rubber chicken and sugary snacks, you?ll have produced a strong statement in front of close friends and loved ones about the way of life you embrace.

Security Council trims UN force in Ivory Coast

The UN Security Council on Thursday renewed the mandate of its peacekeeping force in the Ivory Coast but reduced its size despite persistent ethnic violence in the west of the country.

In a resolution adopted unanimously, the council said the operation -- known by its acronym UNOCI -- should "reinforce their field presence (...) in areas where civilians are at greater risks, particularly but not only in western Cote d'Ivoire."

The council nevertheless decided to cut a battalion from UNOCI's military component, leaving 8,837 soldiers, while keeping the police component unchanged at 1,555.

At the same time, the Security Council added three armed helicopters to the force, which will be taken from the UN Mission in Liberia. They were to be used to patrol the border between the two countries.

Western Ivory Coast has long been beset by ethnic tensions fueled by land disputes.

At least 12 people were killed and 40 others injured in July 20 attacks in Duekoue, according to the United Nations.

A big crowd from the town raided the camp for 5,000 displaced people on its outskirts, in reprisals for the death of five individuals allegedly killed by people from the camp.

Most camp residents come from the Guere ethnic group, which has tense relations with the Malinke people, who made up most of the attackers, according to witnesses.

The northern Malinke are considered to be supporters of President Alassane Ouattara, while the Guere were held to back former president Laurent Gbagbo, who clung to power for about four months after losing an election in late 2010.

The changes made to UNOCI by the Security Council were in response to recommendations by the UN secretariat, which has been cutting spending on peacekeeping missions around the world.

After the Security Council vote, Ivory Coast's ambassador to the United Nations, Youssoufou Bamba, deplored the reduction in size of the peacekeeping force, but said that with the redeployments to the west there would be no security vacuum.

The resolution said the "protection of civilians shall remain the priority for UNOCI" but that greater emphasis should be placed on supporting the demobilization of militias and reforms of the security apparatus.

Revamping the army remains one of the principal challenges confronting Outtara, who took office in 2001 following the election crisis, which ended in two weeks of warfare that left about 3,000 people dead.

Opponents to Approved N.Y.U. Expansion Plan Tossed out of City ...

By Paul Bisceglio

?Chin and Quinn did us in!? jeered over 50 opponents to New York University?s expansion plan from a balcony overlooking City Council?s chamber. ?Shame on you!?

Greenwich Village residents, community activists and N.Y.U. professors filled the chamber to capacity yesterday to witness the full City Council?s final vote to approve hotly debated zoning and map changes that will allow the university to construct four new high-rise buildings over the course of 17 years, 2014 to 2031.

The opponents became increasingly vocal as the time to vote neared, and broke into chants just before it. Speaker Christie Quinn asked for silence and warned the opponents that they would be kicked out, but the chants continued, and security escorted the entire balcony out of the building.

The proposal passed by a 44-to-1 vote.

Prior to the meeting, the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation (GVSHP) commissioned a 32-page report that outlined the negative impacts of the expansion plan, and opponents wrote a letter to City Council that expressed the community?s dissatisfaction with the proposal.

?The NYU expansion plan will turn a residential neighborhood into a company town and subject it to twenty straight years of construction,? said GVSHP Executive Director Andrew Berman in a statement.? ?The Council ignored the grave environmental impacts of this plan and the much better options that had been put forward for NYU to locate new facilities in the Financial District; this is a sad day for democracy in New York City.?

John Sexton, N.Y.U.?s president, however, said that the approval marked ?a great day for N.Y.U. and for New York City,? and said that the expansion will provide the city with much-needed construction jobs and university positions.

His statement argued that the plan ?strikes an important balance: permitting N.Y.U. to maintain academic excellence by meeting our educational- and research-space needs on our existing footprint over the next two decades, while at the same time addressing the concerns of our neighbors on such issues as improving access to open space.?

The opponents are now considering legal action. ?We will be working closely with our partners in the NYU faculty and with our lawyers at Gibson Dunn to pursue every avenue available to us to remedy this tragic wrong which has been imposed upon the people of the City of New York,? said Berman.

NFL launches wellness program for players

NEW YORK (AP) ? In an offseason marked by Junior Seau's suicide and scores of lawsuits over brain injuries, the NFL on Thursday launched a comprehensive wellness program for current and retired players ? including a confidential mental health phone line.

"There is no higher priority for the National Football League than the health and wellness of our players," NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in an email Thursday to more than 11,000 players announcing NFL Total Wellness. "This service is here for you."

An outside agency will run NFL Life Line, a free consultation service to inform players and family members about the signs of crisis, symptoms of common mental health problems, as well as where to get help. Experts in suicide prevention and substance abuse are among those involved in developing and administering the program.

The website for the program also features special video messages from various NFL stars, including Brett Favre, Michael Irvin, Michael Strahan, Herschel Walker, Jevon Kearse and Cris Carter, urging players to get help and letting them know they are not alone.

Shannon Jordan, president of the Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund, a charity for NFL retirees who need health care, said the program is long overdue.

"Unfortunately sometimes it takes a tragedy to put something together quicker, but we're just happy that it's finally here and we'll keep expanding on it," said Jordan, who is part of the NFL's effort.

"There are a lot of pieces that still need to be worked out, but we couldn't be more elated to be able to refer guys to a program like this and hopefully save a lot more lives."

Goodell also sent an open letter to NFL fans outlining the program.

"NFL Total Wellness will empower players to make positive health decisions," Goodell said, "promote help-seeking behaviors in connection with behavioral and mental health issues; provide education on family safety; and enhance transition programs that help players adjust to new stages of life."

The announcement came as many training camps are getting under way.

It also comes just days after former Raiders quarterback Ken Stabler became the latest big name from the NFL's past to sue the league over head injuries.

Stabler is the first plaintiff among 73 listed in a federal lawsuit filed Monday in Philadelphia, where other cases involving some of the more than 2,400 NFL veterans suing the league were recently consolidated into a master complaint.

Like Stabler, the other retirees claim the NFL did not do enough to shield them from the long-term effects of repeated hits to the head, even when medical evidence established a connection between head trauma in football and health problems later in life.

Stabler, 66, claimed in the lawsuit he has experienced cognitive difficulties, including headaches, dizziness, depression, fatigue, sleep problems, irritability and numbness/tingling in his spine.

Seau's family recently requested that brain tissue of the NFL linebacker be sent to the National Institutes of Health for examination.

The former All-Pro died May 2 of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. He was 43, just 2 1/2 years retired from a career that saw him picked for 12 Pro Bowls.

His death had similarities to that of former Chicago Bears safety Dave Duerson, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest last year. Duerson left a suicide note, asking that his brain be studied for signs of trauma.

NFL officials said while Seau's death was high profile, the league's suicide numbers across the board are low. They said in the past 25 years there have been 13 documented suicides by those who played in the NFL.

Nonetheless, after Seau died, both the NFL and the players' union acknowledged more could be done to provide mental health services.

While not mentioning the lawsuits or deaths, Goodell's emailed letter noted that members of the NFL family are not immune to challenges all individuals face.

The Plaintiffs Executive Committee for the NFL concussion litigation said in a statement Thursday afternoon that the latest program lends credence to lawsuits against the league.

"The NFL engaged in a decades-long campaign of deceit and deception to actively conceal from its players the risks they faced from repeated head impacts," said the statement emailed to The Associated Press. "This latest initiative is admission of this fact. Ultimately, it will not provide the security and care these former players so desperately need."

Troy Vincent, vice president of NFL Player Engagement, said the NFL already had some programs in place but the confidential lifeline run by an outside agency is a step forward, as are efforts to take away the stigma associated with mental health issues.

The video messages emphasize that.

Irvin, in a poignant message filmed last month, addressed his "brothers" and urged them to be open.

"We are part of an NFL family," Irvin said. "We do have to look out for one another the way we did on the football field. ... We have to share with one another ... but we don't talk. We shut up and ... we implode. We put ourselves in isolation and that's the worst thing you can do."

Thursday's announcement came following a meeting at NFL offices attended by Goodell, Jordan, Dr. David Satcher, a former U.S. Surgeon General, along with Vincent and Robert Gulliver, NFL executive vice president of human resources and chief diversity officer. Vincent and Gulliver will direct the program.

Satcher has conducted 14 mental health forums for NFL retired players over the past two years and will coordinate more events across the country as well as online webinars.

Gulliver and Vincent are charged with establishing an advisory board that will include former players and coaches and medical professionals. The board in part will help develop a training program for peer counselors and transition coaches.

"We want to make sure we're providing the right services, that they're accessible and easy to use," Gulliver said.

The NFL Player Care Foundation also will build upon its national health screening program for former players, with Hall of Famers Dick Butkus and Mike Haynes serving as ambassadors.

"The thing that's very important, and groundbreaking really, is also its inclusion of family members, having family members be able to call the line as well," said Timothy Lineberry, a Mayo Clinic psychiatrist and suicide expert in Rochester, Minn. "It's a confidential line, and we know that people are willing to call a confidential line to get help and get resources and be able to get somewhere where they can get help."

5 ways to build your profile without physically being there ? Part 1 ...

When I started my own business I had a 20 month old and a 3 year old. My decision to be my own boss had been preceded being made redundant, whilst the global economy crashed. Yes, that was three years ago. As my business was started in haste, I didn?t have the luxury of pots of savings to full back on or months of diligent preparation. My redundancy pay was, shall we say, not as generous as I would have liked it to be. All these reasons meant I needed to put food on the table quickly, but without the luxury of being at every networking opportunity available. Childcare made it difficult to get out there. For example, I?ve not yet found a nanny or childminder who is willing to start at 06:00 at the morning to let me go breakfast networking. In addition, evening networking events tends to get expensive when you factor in the cost of a babysitter for the evening.

Let?s forget the cost of physically being there ? I also didn?t want to spend large amounts of time away from my family. My whole reason for wanting to be my own boss, was to enable me to build an income around the demands of my young family. So, I needed a safe and easy way of building my profile without having to actually get out there and physically meet folks.

So how did I do that? And, more importantly, how can you learn from my example regardless of whether you are building a client portfolio, or just making sure your profile is high within your firm?

1. Know who is important to you

If my experience working with delegates on business networking courses is anything to go by, most people have not sat down and thought about who they need to spend time with, and why. If you only have limited time to physically ?be there?, then choose wisely which events you will ?be there?, and who you will be spending time when you are there. For example, if you are employed, then who are the top 10 people who through their influence, position or budget can help you achieve your business goals? If you can only meet 2 people each week for a coffee or lunch together, who should be those two people?

2. Use social networking sites

Ten years ago, when social networking sites were in their infancy, it was all about phone, email or meeting up in person. Now, you can keep in touch through many different channels ? phone, email, meeting, skype, text, twitter, LinkedIn, facebook. For example, when I was working a 3 day week, I used to keep up with all the gossip in my department via Facebook. Sites like Twitter and LinkedIn provide you with a one to many communication tool. This allows you to have conversations ?little and often? between the 1:2:1 interactions, such as a phone call. My use of Twitter and LinkedIn now negates my requirement to be at large conferences or mix and mingle events. I tend to use them to make initial contact with potential prospects and introducers.

Ways 3, 4 and 5 will be continued in tomorrow?s blog post

NASA X-ray concept inspired from a roll of Scotch? tape

ScienceDaily (July 26, 2012) ? The inspiration behind NASA scientist Maxim Markevitch's quest to build a highly specialized X-ray mirror using a never-before-tried technique comes from an unusual source: a roll of Scotch? tape.

Markevitch and a team of X-ray optics experts at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., have begun investigating the feasibility of fashioning a low-cost mirror from plastic tape and tightly rolling it like the sticky adhesive commonly found in most homes and offices.

"I remember looking at a roll of Scotch tape and thinking, 'was it possible to use the same design for capturing hard X-rays,'" Markevitch recalled. "I talked with a few people, and to my surprise, they didn't see any principal reasons why it couldn't be done."

With funding from NASA's Center Innovation Fund, the team now is pursuing Markevitch's "early-stage" idea and has already begun testing candidate materials that could be fashioned into a rolled mirror capable of collecting X-rays -- in itself a challenging proposition. To capture these ever-elusive photons, the mirrors must be curved and nested inside a cylindrical optical assembly. The rounded geometry allows the high-energy light to graze their surfaces, much like a stone skimming the surface of a pond.

Motivating Markevitch is the fact that these highly specialized mirrors are time-consuming and expensive to build and assemble, despite efforts to dramatically reduce production costs. Making matters more demanding is the fact that X-ray observatories in the future likely will require much larger collecting areas, therefore requiring an even greater number of individual mirror segments that all must be nested, coated with layers of highly reflective materials, and perfectly coaligned inside their optical assemblies. "It's a lot of work fabricating these rigid shells and making sure they're properly aligned," he said.

The Science

The science Markevitch would like to pursue is one that would require a larger mirror. Over the past few decades, NASA has launched several X-ray observatories sensitive to lower-energy "soft X-rays," including the Chandra X-ray Observatory. They discovered and imaged the faint, diffuse X-ray signal from a variety of astrophysical sources dominated by thermal emission, such as galaxies and clusters of galaxies. Other missions, like NASA's Swift satellite, were sensitive to higher-energy gamma rays, but they lacked imaging capabilities.

"There remains a large and totally unexplored discovery space of faint, diffuse nonthermal astrophysical objects emitting at high X-ray energies," Markevitch said.

One class of objects waiting to be better understood is cosmic rays -- highly energetic subatomic particles generated in deep space -- that reside in galaxy clusters and other large-scale structure in the universe. Scientists believe that cosmic rays and the magnetic fields between galaxy clusters can alter the physics within galaxy clusters. A better understanding of these physics could reveal more about the birth and evolution of the cosmos, Markevitch said.

To study cosmic rays, however, observatories would have to be tuned to hard X-rays. Although NASA's recently launched Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) and Japan's New X-ray Telescope, also known as Astro-H, are sensitive to hard X-rays, Markevitch said they only "will graze the surface of this discovery space." Because the signal is so faint, only an imaging X-ray telescope with a collecting area 30 times larger than that of NuSTAR, working with current and future radio telescopes, could do the job, Markevitch said.

"However, to our knowledge, nothing of the kind is planned or even proposed in the U.S. or elsewhere because of the cost something like this presents," he said.

The only solution then is developing a new technology that would dramatically reduce the cost of building X-ray optics and increase the size of the light-collecting area. "If we can build a mirror that's big enough, this might be the way to go," he said.

Under his research plan, Markevitch, Takashi Okajima, Will Zhang, and Peter Serlemitsos are acquiring and testing candidate tape that would be coated on one side with a multilayer of reflective material and then wound into a roll, forming a large number of densely packed nested shells that are spaced by the varying thickness of the tape. "The collecting surface is automatic, it's rolled, self-supporting, and already aligned," Markevitch said. Multiple rolls then would be placed in an optical assembly, providing a much larger collecting area, or, in other words, a larger mirror.

"Maxim's Scotch tape idea is in an early stage," Zhang said. "In the next year, we will know whether it has a chance of working."

If it does, it could prove "game-changing for hard X-ray astronomy," Markevitch said. "It could significantly reduce the cost of building large mirrors, bringing within reach the possibility of building a mirror with 10 to 30 times greater effective area than current X-ray telescopes."

London 2012 Olympics: four days to go - live blog

Welcome to today?s Olympics live blog ? with only four days to go until the Games begin.

Here?s what?s coming up today:

? The Jacques Rogge, the president of the International Olympic Committee, has given an interview with the BBC, saying he feels security for the Games will be fine despite the G4S fiasco and he is happy with the Games?s strict sponsorship rules, emphasising that spectators can wear what they want to the Olympics, although ?ambush marketing? will be targeted. He also defended IOC members? staying in plush hotels, saying they worked very hard. I?ll post a full report shortly. IOC members are due to visit the Olympic Village today, attend a reception at Buckingham Palace and begin their 124th session, at the Royal Opera House.

? Sir Chris Hoy is set to be named later today as the flag-bearer for Team GB at Friday's opening ceremony. It will be the second successive time the cyclist will have been given the honour - he also carried the union flag in the closing ceremony at Beijing four years ago. Hoy won the biggest number of votes among the other 542 members of the British delegation. Last week it was announced that he would not ride in the match sprint at the Olympics, although he will take part in the keirin and the team sprint.

? The Olympic torch is travelling around south London, visiting Bexley, Lewisham, Bromley, Croydon and Streatham. Doreen Lawrence, the mother of murdered teenager Stephen Lawrence, will carry the flame into the forecourt of the centre in Lewisham set up in memory of her son. The flame will also travel to Wimbledon and be carried on to centre court, where the Olympic tennis will take place, starting on Saturday. And the torch will also take a detour into the fictional London borough of Walford when it visits the EastEnders set ? live scenes of the torch passing through Albert Square will be dropped into tonight?s otherwise-prerecorded episode. Send your pictures to paul.owen@guardian.co.uk or tweet me @paultowen.

? A triumphant Bradley Wiggins was due back home today to have a very short bit of time off with his family and allow the realisation that he has become the first British man to win the Tour de France to sink in. But he is thought to be planning a ride on his local Lancashire roads and will later join his fellow cyclists in preparing for the Olympic road race this weekend.

In today?s news so far:

? Lord Coe, the head of London organising committee (Locog), has said it is not up to him who will light the Olympic flame on Friday at the opening ceremony. Coe said he had input but the final decision would be taken by the opening ceremony creative teams led by the film directors Danny Boyle and Stephen Daldry. On Saturday the British Olympic Association chief executive, Andy Hunt, said the decision would be made jointly between the BOA and Locog. Possible candidates include Daley Thompson, Steve Redgrave, Kelly Holmes, Roger Bannister, David Beckham, or a non-sporting figure such as a child from east London. A dress rehearsal of the opening ceremony is to take place today.

? There were severe delays on the Jubilee line, a major route to the site of the Games, as Londoners wait to see how the crowded tube system will cope with the influx of Olympic visitors. There were also delays on the Overground and the Central line was partly suspended after a person fell under a train.

? The US basketball team beat Argentina 86-80 at a friendly in Barcelona.

All this and more right here throughout the day.

The Absolute Highlight of the Global Business Travel Association ...

The highlight of being at the Global Business Travel Association?s 2012 convention today wasn?t:

  • Hearing JetBlue CEO Dave Barger talk about going fishing with American CEO Tom Horton, while declaring that he didn?t think it was possible to merge cultures at a company.
  • Watching the American Airlines video on its new Airbus A321 interiors ? complete with 3D glasses and with its current livery zapped off the pictures ? walking through the 3-class cabin including 1-1 seating in first class and lie flat business class seats.
  • Getting to be the designated maverick, off-the-reservation guy speaking on stage about how corporate travel policies burn out travelers and don?t save companies money ? to a bunch of travel managers and suppliers of managed travel solutions

Nope. The highlight was definitely getting to meet Deltalina.

Now, it?s a good thing I?m not sticking around the next two days. Because lunchtime speakers George W. Bush and Bill Clinton wouldn?t come close to living up.

Bathroom Lighting Tips | ej-fransen.com

Lighting is a basic yet essential part of any bathroom remodel plan ? whether you need task lighting at the mirror in order to get ready in the morning or you want to set off your new decor to its best advantage. Even just a fixture or two situated in the right place can make a world of difference in your bathroom?s usability, appearance and even its energy-efficiency.

Avoid Casting Shadows

One of the cardinal rules of lighting in the bathroom is to avoid casting shadows around the mirror. While many bathrooms utilize a row of bulbs or a light bar above the mirror for illumination ? light coming from above and in front of you can cause your chin, nose and brows to cast shadows on your face while using the mirror. Ideally, a light fixture should be placed on either side of the mirror to provide light from both sides and prevent shadows.

Recessed lighting is also not recommended for use around the mirror since it has a tendency to cause deep shadows if not placed properly. If you wish to use recessed lighting at the mirror, it should be placed as close to the mirror as possible and not directly above where you would stand in front of the mirror. Recessed lighting can also be placed elsewhere in the bathroom as an auxiliary light source for other fixtures that don?t give off very much light, but careful placement is a must.

Take Advantage of Natural Light

While bathrooms aren?t always constructed with natural light in mind, bringing natural light into your bathroom is a great way to set it off to its best advantage as well as reducing the need to turn on lights every time. While a window isn?t always desirable in the bathroom due to privacy and the cost of adding a new window ? there are other great options for utilizing natural light in your bathroom. You might install translucent glass blocks in the wall in a row or pattern.

Another possibility is installing a solar light tube in the ceiling. Unlike a skylight which can require extensive modification to your roof, a solar light tube is designed to pass between the roofing beams, minimizing the hassle of installation. Sunlight is reflected down the tube and through a diffuser in the ceiling, providing a good deal of soft natural light during daylight hours.

Combine Lighting Types

Ideally, your bathroom should have a balanced mix of different lighting types that are suited to different purposes ? whether you?re getting ready for a busy day or you want to come home and relax in the tub after a long day. The four different types of lighting typically recommended in a bathroom remodel are as follows:

Task Lighting: Bright lighting for applying makeup, shaving or other daily routines you perform in the bathroom. (Example: Placing fixtures on either side of the mirror)

Ambient Lighting: Soft lighting that is dispersed throughout the room by directing it towards the ceiling. (Example: Placing crown molding along the wall just below the ceiling and concealing rope or strip lighting behind the molding, allowing for soft lighting from around the edge of the room)

Accent Lighting: Lighting used primarily to set off architectural features or decorations in the bathroom. (Example: Track lighting utilized to direct light towards artwork you?ve placed on the walls in the bathroom)

Decorative Lighting: Lighting used simply for aesthetic reasons rather than to provide illumination (Example: An attractive chandelier or pendant light suspended from the ceiling)

In addition, hooking up your lighting to dimmer switches is an effective way to control the lighting in your bathroom ? allowing you to turn the lights down to the minimal amount needed to see at nighttime or to set a relaxing mood, for instance.

Consider Energy-Efficient Lighting

For many homeowners, saving money is the first thing on their minds when it comes to home improvement. Energy-efficient lighting is another possibility to consider for your bathroom remodel ? although you may pay more for the initial installation, the long-term savings can offer a great return on your investment. CFLs (compact fluorescent lamps) can take the place of incandescent bulbs in various fixtures, but LEDs are also an attractive option to replace some of the fixtures in the bathroom. In particular, LEDs are outstanding as a nightlight since they consume very little energy and will last for at least 10 years before requiring replacement.
