Faults show Lake Tahoe area's shaky past

As a cross-country skier trekked through the wilderness near Lake Tahoe 15 years ago, he noticed something odd about the trail he'd taken. The hill crest that had been beneath his skis abruptly dropped off, then picked up again about 20 feet away.

As luck would have it, the skier was a geologist, and the oddities of that trail ? including the offset moraines, or ancient glacial deposits, he noticed that day ? helped him piece together the seismic hazards underlying the Lake Tahoe region.

"As you walk along these very prominent geologic features, all of the sudden, that same feature is now over there," said James Howle, a geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Carnelian Bay, Calif. "These long, linear moraines are very abruptly offset, and I couldn't help but ask, 'What caused that?'"

Howle has been studying the region ever since. He's now identified five active seismic faults, which point to important landslide and earthquake hazards ? potentially up to magnitude-6.9 temblors ? for those living near Lake Tahoe.

Finding faults
Together, the five faults make up the Tahoe-Sierra Frontal Fault Zone, which lies between the Sierra Nevada and the west side of Lake Tahoe. Geologists had known about several of these faults before Howle's latest findings, which were detailed online May 18 in the journal Geological Society of America Bulletin, but heavy tree and brush cover made the area difficult to survey.

Using LiDAR, a type of laser radar that can "see" through dense vegetation, Howle's team precisely traced the five faults and measured their offsets, or the distances seismic activity had moved land on each side of the faults. They also found, from radioisotope data, that the glacial moraines in the region were 21,000 and 70,000 years old ? an important piece of the puzzle that scientists hadn't known before, Howle said.

The data allowed Howle's team to calculate how fast the land along the faults is moving. The rates they calculated are two to three times greater than had been estimated, he said. [ 13 Crazy Earthquake Facts ]

Those slip rates boil down to significant seismic risks. A rupture along any of the five faults could generate a magnitude-6.3 to 6.6 quake, the team calculated. If two or more adjacent faults ruptured together, they could produce a magnitude-6.9 or greater quake.

"The seismic hazard itself hasn't increased," Howle told OurAmazingPlanet. "The faults have always been there, the hazard has always been there, we just didn't have the data to quantify it until now."

Quakes and slides
What do the findings mean for those who call Lake Tahoe home? Be prepared, advised Howle, who lives in the area and has no plans to relocate.

    3. Supervolcanoes may have shorter fuse

The faults have not produced any major quakes since people have been living in the region, but that doesn't mean they won't, he said. The team doesn't have enough evidence to determine exactly how often earthquakes recur along these faults, but Howle estimates it's on the timescale of thousands of years. Since they don't know when the last quake occurred, the next could hit at any time.

What's more, earthquakes aren't the only danger. The team's LiDAR images show evidence of massive ancient land and rockslides associated with the quakes.

"It's kind of a latent hazard, and people don't take it seriously because there hasn't been much seismic activity here in historical times," Howle said. "But these new data clearly show the faults are active. They haven't ruptured while we've been around here, but they have been active in recent geologic time."

AP Exclusive: Video draws animal cruelty charges

(AP) ? Prosecutors have filed animal cruelty charges against the owner and seven employees at a Southern California livestock auction house after undercover video shot by an animal rights group showed workers kicking, hitting and tossing the animals as they were readied for sale.

The grainy video, obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press and shot by the Los Angeles-based group Mercy for Animals, shows workers at Ontario Livestock Sales in Ontario, Calif., kicking and stomping on pigs to get them to move through a narrow chute, hitting emus with a baton and slinging baby goats by the neck and hind legs. In one shot, two workers drag a sick sheep that can't walk by its ears and heave it into the back of a van.

Prosecutors have filed a total of 21 misdemeanor counts against the owner, Horacio Santorsola, and seven employees after conducting further investigation with the help of the Inland Valley Humane Society, said Reza Daghbandan, a prosecutor with the San Bernardino County district attorney's office.

The defendants, who are not in custody, have a July 20 court date and face a maximum of a year in county jail and a $1,000 fine if convicted, he said.

Santorsola, 73, said the case was exaggerated and he and his employees had done nothing wrong.

He has not been cited once in the 18 years he's owned the business, he said, and grabbing animals by their necks and legs is necessary because they are not tame.

"I think it's a bunch of crap," Santorsola said. "How are you going to pick them up? They don't have a leash. They run, believe me, they do run."

The video was taken earlier this year over a seven-week period by an undercover investigator using a buttonhole camera, said Matt Rice, director of investigations at Mercy for Animals.

Prosecutors relied on the help of veterinarians to determine which actions crossed the line into criminal behavior, Daghbandan said.

"This isn't the same standard of care as a house pet would get ... but we felt comfortable that these instances went too far," he said.

Animal handling experts who reviewed the footage called the treatment of the animals, which include emus, pigs, goats, sheep and cows, "brutally improper."

"If they were to do this to a companion animal like a dog or a cat, everyone would jump up in outrage," said Holly Cheever, a veterinarian and expert witness in animal cruelty cases who is also vice president of New York State Humane Association.

Cheever said in one shot, a cow appears to be suffering from a prolapsed uterus and is bleeding.

"Even food animals are supposed to be given proper care and protection from abuse and this is very clear cut abuse," she said. "The dragging of the downed animals, the tossing of the baby animals onto the floor, leaving them gasping and dying: It's hard to choose any one aspect because it's pretty unpleasant from beginning to end."

A website for Ontario Livestock Sales says the family-owned business 40 miles east of Los Angeles holds auctions every Tuesday and handles horses, cattle, goats, hogs and exotic animals. The facility, which was founded in 1936, sells 1,000 to 1,300 animals every week, according to its website.

Mercy for Animals has filmed at livestock facilities around the U.S., including footage at a poultry farm that last year led Target and McDonald's to drop their egg supplier after undercover footage showed hens packed into cramped cages, male chicks being tossed into plastic bags to suffocate and workers cutting off the tips of chicks' beaks.

(U//FOUO) U.S. Marine Corps Civil Affairs Detachment Operations in ...

(U//FOUO) MEB-A civil affairs (CA) was organized as a primary MEB staff section under the MEB-A Assistant Chief of Staff for Civil-Military Operations (G-9), vice a stand-alone CAG with a commanding officer. Its subordinate elements, including 4th CAG, Det L, conducted field operations. Det L Marines were assigned in general support (GS) of MEB-A and direct support (DS) of Regimental Combat Team (RCT) 3 and subsequently RCT 7 following the RCT relief in place (RIP) in November 2009. The Det L headquarters element GS team supported units that did not fall under the RCT but who were still responsible for battlespace, such as the MEB-A Brigade Headquarters Group (BHG), 3d Battalion 11th Marines (3/11) (an artillery unit), and 2d Light Armored Reconnaissance (LAR) Battalion.

(U//FOUO) As part of the pre-deployment training (PTP), 4th CAG, Det L participated in a portion of Enhanced Mojave Viper (EMV) with their supported battalions. This was important in terms of preparing for counter-insurgency (COIN) operations in Afghanistan and establishing and maturing working relationships. Such training and relationship development should continue to be replicated. However, due to the compressed timeline between activation of the reserves and deployment, Det L was divided into two groups, with each group alternating between participating in two weeks of EMV and completing other mandatory pre-deployment training. Future CAG deployment cycles should be structured to enable all CA Marines to participate in the entirety of EMV with their supported battalions.

(U//FOUO) Insufficient communications resources and connectivity hindered Det L?s ability to conduct command and control, share information, and submit reports. This included a lack of radios with sufficient range, land-line connections, and computer networks and was particularly limiting given that Det L CA teams supported units dispersed throughout the MEB-A area of operations (AO), making regularly scheduled, in-person coordination infeasible.

(U//FOUO) MEB-A and 4th CAG attempted to determine sources of local instability and develop effective response plans employing the tactical conflict assessment and planning framework (TCAPF) methodology developed by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and which was adopted by the U.S. Army and the MEB. TCAPF focuses on assessing local measures of stability and sources of instability by directly surveying the population. The MEB derived metrics from TCAPF in an attempt to target identified sources of instability and assess the conditions for transition of responsibilities to the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan (GIRoA).

(U//FOUO) Fourth CAG deployed 37 Marines and sailors for Det L, many of them E-4 and below with varying degrees of CA training and experience, to cover the MEB-A AO, which included three provinces and seven districts consisting of 58,000 square miles of territory. This required restructuring the CA Det into teams as small as one or two Marines serving at remote outposts. The small size of the teams, often composed of junior personnel, combined with mobility challenges experienced by all MEB-A units was a significant limiting factor in the overall impact of the MEB CA mission.

(U//FOUO) Det L?s ability to engage with local Afghan populations, assess and prioritize needs, conduct civil-military operations (CMO) planning, advise unit commanders, and respond with funds necessary to complete projects requested by local leaders supported MEB-A operations and facilitated the MEB?s ability to leverage ?money as a weapons system?. These were the primary means by which MEB-A CA contributed to stability and COIN operations.

(U//FOUO) Det L had limited RIP or face-to-face turn-over upon their May 2009 arrival in-country. Approximately half of the Det L CA teams only had a few hours to conduct turn-over with the units replacing them during their RIP in December 2009. As a result, these teams were unable to directly introduce individual replacements to Afghan key leaders or provide a definitive transition of the relationships they had established during the course of their seven month deployment. These personal relationships are critical to successful COIN operations and time must be allocated to ensure they are managed effectively during RIP or other personnel transitions.

Key Points:

  • (U//FOUO) The two month period between mobilization and deployment was insufficient time to optimize pre-deployment training. The general consensus among 4th CAG, Det L personnel was that another 15 days would have enabled Det L to conduct more advanced infantry skills training and more in-depth civil affairs and cultural training, particularly with the junior Marines.
  • (U//FOUO) Combined Information Data Network Exchange (CIDNE) was the primary Civil Information Management (CIM) tool and it was intended that all CA project and key leader engagement (KLE) reports and critical infrastructure data be loaded into CIDNE. Det L also used SharePoint as a platform to disseminate and share information. However, the effectiveness of both of these tools was degraded by communications connectivity limitations, including limited communications equipment and network architecture at the COPs and other remote positions and a lack of computers or access to computers.
  • (U//FOUO) Det L used Commanders Emergency Response Program (CERP) funds as the primary mechanism for using money as a ?weapons system? to help achieve MEB-A?s desired effects. CA Marines were designated as paying agents (PA) and project purchasing officers (PPO). CERP funds were the most readily available and provided flexibility and responsiveness. CA Marines also used Post-Operations Emergency Relief Fund (POERF), an International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) NATO fund available for named operations. The benefits of POERF included the ability to use this money to fill some of the funding gaps when CERP was unavailable or could not be used due to statutory restrictions.
  • (U//FOUO) Battalion commanders were limited to $25,000 of bulk CERP funds available on the battlefield at any given time. The process established for accounting and replenishing these funds was onerous and, to a great extent, seemingly arbitrary in its execution. This process was regarded as time consuming and logistically demanding and it occasionally deterred units from initiating larger scale CA projects.
  • (U//FOUO) MEB-A and Det L operational CA was focused principally on the governance and development lines of operation (LOO). This was largely dependent on CA?s ability to cultivate effective key leader relationships, respond expeditiously to local needs, and help establish the conditions for GIRoA success. CA and CMO efforts that facilitated this included:
    • CA operations were integrated with information operations (IO) and the employment of ?radio in a box? (RIAB) broadcasting systems. The targeted distribution of personal radios was considered to be among the most successful and effective means of disseminating information to the local population.
    • To help facilitate improved governance by the GIRoA, Det L also worked to construct or refurbish government offices in towns and district centers.
    • The majority of CA development projects requested by local Afghans centered on water and included digging wells, the reconstruction of canals to improve irrigation, and constructing bridges across canals to improve mobility. Other important projects included refurbishment of bazaars and building roads to stimulate economic activity and improve freedom of movement for the local population.
    • Det L worked with female engagement teams (FET) established by MEB-A in an effort to initiate contact and build relationships with the Afghan female population in their AO.
  • (U//FOUO) Social and cultural dynamics unique to the region of Afghanistan that constituted the MEB-A AO were significant planning factors for MEB shape, clear, hold, and build operations and the CA activities that supported them. Det L personnel were nearly unanimous in expressing the idea that pre-deployment cultural training would have been more effective had it been more in-depth and tailored to the specific provinces in which CA Marines were intended to operate.
  • (U//FOUO) The infantry battalions and other supported units provided all of the primary life support and logistics support to their assigned CA Marines. Det L Marines were entirely dependent upon their supported units for communications equipment and mobility, as their only vehicles and communications assets assigned were M-1114 up-armored HMMWVs (that were not authorized for use off base due to the IED threat) and hand-held Motorola radios that were only effective out to 4-5 miles line-of-sight. While this meant that 4th CAG would not have to deploy a large amount of equipment, this also hindered the ability of CAG Marines to conduct operations and respond to emergent opportunities.
  • (U//FOUO) In addition to low manning levels, the pace of CA operations was constrained by limited existing infrastructure and availability of skilled local contractors and building materials and the effect this had on the ability of Afghan communities to support and sustain CA projects. Because of these factors, Det L did not attempt to cover the entirety of the districts and instead, focused their operations on where the population was, not necessarily on where the enemy was.
  • (U//FOUO) Fourth CAG was tasked on occasion with coordinating medical civil action program (MEDCAP) and dental civil action program (DENCAP) events. In anticipation of this, the Det L commander had requested (but did not receive) a preventative medicine or environmental health specialist be assigned to Det L, in addition to, or in place of, the corpsman they received.

?

Money as a Weapons System

(U//FOUO) Det L?s ability to engage with local Afghan populations, assess and prioritize needs, and respond with funds necessary to complete projects requested by local leaders facilitated MEB-A?s ability to leverage ?money as a weapons system?. This was a principle means by which CA contributed to stability and COIN operations.

(U//FOUO) The Commanders Emergency Response Program (CERP) funds were the primary mechanism employed by Det L in using money as a weapons system. CERP funds were most readily available and afforded CA flexibility and responsiveness. CA Marines also used Post-Operations Emergency Relief Fund (POERF), an International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) NATO fund available for named operations. With the MEB higher headquarters (Regional Command-South) able to authorize single expenditures of up to 17,500 Euros (approximately U.S. $23,301) and as much as 70,000 Euros (approximately U.S. $93,204) available at a given time, the benefits of POERF included the ability to fill gaps when CERP was not available or could not be used due to statutory restrictions. For example, governed by ISAF SOP 930 and described as having fewer bureaucratic hurdles to overcome than CERP, POERF was used to rapidly fund programs such as providing emergency financial assistance to internally displaced people who were forced to relocate due to MEB military operations.

(U//FOUO) USFOR-A Publication 1-06, ?Money As A Weapons System ? Afghanistan (MAAWS-A)? was produced as a framework for U.S. funding program oversight and placed restrictions on the usage and amounts of funds available to commanders at any given time or regarding a specific expenditure. In accordance with MAAWS-A, the CERP program has the following primary components: Reconstruction, Humanitarian Relief, Battle Damage, and Condolence Payments. The overall program coordinator is USFOR-A J8; however, the USFOR-A Engineers, J9, and J3/5 nonlethal cell serve as project managers for their particular areas and functions. As applied to MEB-A, MAAWS-A, in conjunction with MEB and RCT CERP SOPs, dictated that:

  • The MEB commanding general could approve projects up to $500,000. However, the USFOR-A commander may delegate approval authority of projects less than or equal to $2,000,000 to subordinate unit commanders.
  • O-6 commanders could approve projects up to $200,000 and O-5 commanders could approve projects up to $25,000. This was for deliberate projects with an approved project plan, separate from bulk funds as described below.
  • O-5 commanders could also maintain bulk funds or cash on-hand and approve quick impact projects up to $5,000 on the spot or pay battle damage claims, each with a maximum of $2,500, in order to expedite the use of money on the battlefield. However, O-5 level commands were limited to a total of $25,000 of bulk funds in the field at any given time, so the commander would have to distribute that money throughout the command. For example, if a battalion was supporting five combat outposts (COP), this would only provide $5,000 for each COP.
    • LtCol DeFrancisci, Det L commander, considered these battalion-level amounts to be insufficient in order for CA to be as responsive as operations demanded. He recommended that:
    • O-5 commanders should have at least $75,000 in bulk CERP available to use in their AO at any given time. For example, per month, this could facilitate approximately ten damage claims and ten to fifteen quick impact cash-for-work projects, such as canal clean-up and improvement, road and bridge repairs, and bazaar clean-up and improvement.
    • Rather than require CA PAs to make their way out of the field and return to MEB headquarters in order to replenish funds (this process could take up to a week or more), MEB Disbursing should travel with funds to the supported units when necessary or on a scheduled basis.

(U//FOUO) In accordance with MAAWS-A, only ranks of E-7 and above could serve as the paying agent (PA) and E-6 and above as project purchasing officer (PPO). However, because of Det L?s preponderance of more junior Marines, the MEB-A comptroller was able to initially obtain a waiver for E-5s and later an additional waiver for E-4s to serve as PAs. As LtCol DeFrancisci noted, ?Civil Affairs is largely an E-5 and above job. We had a lot of E-4s and below.?

IIT Calculation for Hong Kong and Macau Residents' Mainland ...

May 29 ? In order to avoid ambiguities surrounding the double taxation of individuals working between Mainland China and the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau, the State Administration of Taxation (SAT) issued the ?Notice on Questions Regarding Tax Arrangements of Individual Employees Working in Both Mainland China and Hong Kong or Macau (SAT Notice [2012] No.16, hereinafter referred as ?Notice?)? in April, clarifying the calculation of individual income tax (IIT) for related personnel.

Calculation of IIT
Income derived in Mainland China by a Hong Kong or Macau resident is subject to individual income tax in Mainland China under Article 1, Section 14 of the DTA between the mainland and the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau.

The formula for calculation is:

  • ITT = [(Total Income ? 4,800 ? Quick Deduction) * (Days in China ? Days Total)

The income derived in the mainland by a Hong Kong or Macau resident is tax exempt under Article 2, Section 14 of the DTA if all of the following conditions are met:

  1. The presence of the person in the mainland does not exceed 183 days in any 12-month period (taxable period)
  2. The income is paid by, or on behalf of, a non-Chinese employer
  3. The income is not borne by a permanent establishment of the employer in the mainland

If the Hong Kong or Macau resident renders services both in the mainland and in Hong Kong or Macau, and the individual?s aggregate periods of stay in the mainland do not exceed 183 days, the income paid or borne by the mainland establishment is still subject to IIT in China, but IIT will be calculated according to chargeable income and time stayed in the mainland. The formula for calculation in such cases is:

  • ITT = [(Total Income ? 4800) x Tax Rate ? Quick Deduction] * (Days in China ? Days Total) x?Income in China ? Income Total?

IIT on bonuses
Individual income tax for one-time bonuses (such as salary increase, dividends) derived in the mainland that crosses different taxable periods for Hong Kong and Macau residents shall be calculated according to the taxable period in the mainland and the two above-mentioned formulas. The ?days in China? refers to the aggregate days that person spends in China during the bonus period and ?days total? refers to all the days during the bonus period.

Filing and reporting
Hong Kong and Macau residents bear the responsibility to report and file with the related tax authorities when paying IIT according to the DTA, and the required documents and process is guided by Article 5 of the ?Notice of SAT regarding Questions about IIT Calculation and Payment of Individuals Who Have No Permanent Address within the Territory in China (guoshuihanfa [1995] No 125).?

The Notice will be effective from June 1, 2012, and the calculation methods will be applicable for incomes generated after June 1.

CreditQ.com Adds Personal Finance Feature to New Site: Personal ...

Newport Beach, CA (PRWEB) May 23, 2012

CreditQ notes that American consumers continue to be pessimistic about current and future financial matters. The latest Bloomberg Consumer Comfort Index finds that people are increasingly concerned with the economy, particularly their personal fiscal situation. The CCI has fallen from previous levels recorded in February, March, and April of this year, and it could signify more of the same for this month. These findings reinforce the results of a survey conducted by the American Psychological Association (entitled Stress in America: Our Health at Risk) earlier this year which found that money is the primary cause for anxiety among those questioned. Not surprisingly, survey participants stated that, in order to relieve stress, they planned to set specific financial goals for 2012.

CreditQ aims to assist consumers in setting clear, well-defined financial goals which may help lessen some of the anxiety surrounding their financial affairs, as well as promote goal-attainment. Whether starting with a budget or not, many people can benefit from setting monetary goals, and having daily reminders that keep them appropriately focused and motivated.

As part of an effort to help consumers gain financial literary and accomplish their monetary goals, CreditQ Social includes a goal management feature on its web site. With the Personal Goal Manager, site members can add numerous financial goals (like save for a vacation), as well as non-financial habits (like quit smoking or go to the gym), which they can update regularly and monitor their progress.

Financial analysts and experts recommend that anyone trying to set financial goals establish short-, medium-, and long-term targets. Typically, people that do so tend to be more successful in accomplishing what they set out to. With the goal management feature, members may:

Tool-wielding robots crawl in bodies for surgery

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? Imagine a tiny snake robot crawling through your body, helping a surgeon identify diseases and perform operations.

It's not science fiction. Scientists and doctors are using the creeping metallic tools to perform surgery on hearts, prostate cancer, and other diseased organs. The snakebots carry tiny cameras, scissors and forceps, and even more advanced sensors are in the works. For now, they're powered by tethers that humans control. But experts say the day is coming when some robots will roam the body on their own.

"It won't be very long before we have robots that are nanobots, meaning they will actually be inside the body without tethers," said Dr. Michael Argenziano, the Chief of Adult Cardiac Surgery at New York-Presbyterian Hospital and Columbia University Medical Center in New York.

Argenziano was involved with some of the first U.S. Food and Drug Administration clinical trials on robotic heart surgery more than 10 years ago. Now he says snake robots have become a commonly used tool that gives surgeons a whole new perspective.

"It's like the ability to have little hands inside the patients, as if the surgeon had been shrunken, and was working on the heart valve," he said.

But Argenziano and experts in robotics say the new creations work best when they're designed for very specific tasks. "The robot is a tool. It is no different in that sense than a scalpel. It's really a master-slave device," he said.

Howie Choset has been researching and building robots, particularly snake robots, at Pittsburgh's Carnegie Mellon University for years.

Choset believes that his snake robot and others like it help reduce medical costs by making complex surgeries faster and easier. Choset says his new design is smaller and more flexible than earlier models: The diameter of the head is less than the size of a dime.

The size of surgical robots allows surgeons to operate with far less damage to the body, helping the patient heal faster. For example, instead of opening the entire chest up during heart surgery, a small incision is made, and the robot crawls inside to the proper spot.

Dr. Ashutosh Tewari of Weill Cornell Medical College in New York has used robotic tools to perform thousands of prostate operations. He said the precision of the tiny robotic tool is vital not just to cutting out cancerous tumors, but to seeing exactly what nerves to leave intact.

Tewari said he's most excited about the potential for surgical robots to do things humans can't do. He said the variety of sensors available for surgical robots keeps expanding, even as they get smaller. He said they may one day be able to test chemicals or blood in the body, or even the electrical connections in nerves.

Argenziano noted that robots aren't a magic cure. "The robot is good at certain things and it's not good at other things," he said. Some studies have found that the cost effectiveness of surgical robots varies greatly. In smaller hospitals, the high cost of purchasing and maintaining a robot may not make sense.

Choset has also built larger snake robots designed for search and rescue, or just exploration. They can climb poles or trees and then look around through a camera in the head, and slither through places humans can't reach.

"We sent our snake robots into these caves off the coast of the Red Sea to look for evidence of ancient Egyptian ships," he said. "To me archaeology is like search and rescue, but everyone's been dead for 5,000 years," reducing the pressure.

Another expert at Carnegie Mellon stresses that there's still an enormous gap between humans and even the most high-tech robots. Manuela Velosa noted that robots have been built that excel at one or two tasks ? but not at the variety of tasks humans perform without even thinking.

Velosa has been building robots that ask humans for help when they don't know what to do, as well as teams of robots that play soccer against each other. Sometimes, the robots surprise her.

During one soccer game against robots from another university, the Carnegie Mellon team scored on a particular play. That sent a positive signal to the robot's computers, which are designed to reward success and discourage failures in the game.

Her robots then tried the play again ? and scored again. It turned out they had discovered a programing flaw in the other team of robots, just like some sports teams find a flaw in their opponents.

In the second half Velosa's robot's kept using the same play, scoring every time, and thus reinforcing the tendency to try the play over and over. The robots crushed the other team.

"It was programmed by me, but it looked to me as if they learned," she said. "I believe we are much closer to having robots be able to coexist with humans. The beautiful thing is you see the robots learning.

A Real Good Deal ? Build a Free Website For Completely Free With ...

For the penniless, it?s quite hard to start and run a business. Of course, one needs a capital to gain profits in the business process. But do you know that you can start a business online-for free? You can build a free website for completely free with free domain name. How about that for a good start-up business? Let?s find out how it works.

Internet marketing can be an expensive venture for a new entrepreneur. When you opted to build a free website for completely free with free domain, chances are you were seeking for a good deal that will launch you to business success without having the need to spend so much. Presumably, this will only apply to beginners and small businesses. With a free website provider, you can create and customize your own website that will serve as your online business portal. You can use the website to display your goods like in a store window or a product catalogue. A business that renders services can also be promoted in a website.

To create your business website, you must register first to a website builder that offers a complete website service for free. This will save you from having to transfer from one platform provider to another in order to get it done. For example, one website builder can only provide you with free website but not the website hosting so you will have to search again. This is so hassle. A complete-service website provider will be give you a domain name (your own), a domain host, a website and a website host all in one transaction. You don?t have to worry about the whole process because the website provider will assist you up to the last detail.

When choosing a free website provider, always consider the quality of the websites they offer. In fairness to them, they are always trying to come up with good-looking and sophisticated websites to meet their clients? needs. But still, you have to make sure that your website will suit the kind of business that you have. Never use colorful skins, unimportant tools and unnecessary webpage features to your business website. Choose the website provider that offers an ad-free website to minimize unimportant details in every page.

To maximize the capacity of your business website, pick on a website provider that offers a generous amount of web space. Some free website providers have storage capacities of up to 5 gigabytes. You can make use of this space to build more complex web pages. Website builders that are capable of improving site traffic are helpful. If you know how to manage your site traffic, your business will surely benefit from it. Also, a free business website that has Meta tags support will have a great chance of landing the first page of a search engine.

There are more special features that you can avail when you start to build a free website for completely free with free domain name. All of those perks will prove relevant to the success of your business.

Jordan Sena shakes off errors as Lamar beats Brush in 3A baseball to stay alive

GREELEY???In a span of a little more than an hour Friday afternoon, Lamar High baseball coach Dave Fassiotto watched his team transform from the Bad News Bears to the Bronx Bombers.

The Savages, who were facing elimination in the Class 3A championship series at Butch Butler Field, committed four early errors and spotted tournament unbeaten Brush a 2-0 lead.

"Oh, God! It's been our Achilles heel up here," said Fassiotto about his team's defense. "Finally the bats broke out and we started getting some hits in the right places."

Did they ever. The Savages stayed alive with a 13-3 pasting of the Beetdiggers thanks to a 10-run sixth inning, which ultimately enforced the mercy rule.

Lamar (19-5) will play another elimination game this morning at 10 a.m. against Eaton for the right to play Brush at 2:30 p.m. The Beetdiggers (18-7), by virtue of going 3-0 last weekend, were assured a spot in the state title game.

Lamar senior pitcher Jordan Sena, whom Fassiotto said was "on a mission," never blinked at the shoddy defense behind him. He settled down and retired 14 consecutive batters.

"Everyone has errors every once in a while," Sena said. "We just battled back and did a good job."

At the plate for the Savages, Tyler Jara did a ton a damage with doubles in the fifth and sixth innings that drove in two runs each time. Jara, Branson Jennings and Kelby Fassiotto each had three hits for Lamar.

Brush coach Mark Muniz knows his Beetdiggers will have to shake this one off quickly.

"We've got to get rid of it out of our mind," he said, "and know that we are still going to play (today) for a state championship."

strategic planning facilitator More Details about strategic planning facilitator here.

As a strategic planning facilitator, have you taken a look at how you use projector and remote? If not, then you should start now. A lot of facilitators think that projector is just a means to an end and that the only function it serves is to make sure you have means to show what's on your computer screen. This is true to a certain extent, since obviously projecting is its primary goal. Using it effectively in facilitating is a different thing all together though.

Checking your projector before a session is part of effective planning. It is always advisable to enter the conference or training room early so that you can at least check that the projector is working. Most projectors take around three minutes before they warm up so coming in right on time means you will have to spend the first couple of minutes of your session waiting for the projector to turn on.

Once you have switched the projector on, you should check your remote control next. As a strategic planning facilitator, it's important for you to know how to use the remote control correctly. In some locations, the standard sized remote control may have already been replaced by small finger-sized usb remote that you have to plug into your computer.

A standard projector control has a couple of basic functions. The first is to freeze your screen. At some time during your presentation, you might need to open up another screen for example. Instead of having to make your participants see the rest of your screen, you can freeze it and all the participants will see is the screen you were last on. The projector remote will also have a button to choose input options. If you use two computers as a lot of facilitators do, you have the capability to switch screens right from the projector.

Other than those buttons, most remote controls also have mouse buttons. These mouse buttons will allow you to move through presentations without having to go back to your pc. The advantage of this is that you don't have to walk from one location to another - a hassle when your facilitator training area is far from the computer you are using.

And that's it. You now know how strategic planning facilitator projector skills for your next class or meeting.

The beauty in the details: Idaho?s ?Field of Heroes?

In Pocatello, Idaho, virtually the entire town has been involved in a special Memorial Day celebration. NBC's Mike Taibbi reports.

By Mike Taibbi, NBC News correspondent

POCATELLO, Idaho?--??I was walking past a hard-used SUV when the passenger window rolled down and a?woman?s?crooked finger?emerged, summoning me over to talk.

?See that man over there, in the red cap???she asked.??That?s my husband.? He started all this???

?All this.? As I let my vision follow hers,?I saw?a vista beneath a morning drizzle of more than 6,000 simple white crosses arranged more or less precisely,?filling the entire soccer field behind?Pocatello?s?Century High?School.? The crosses, seized together by a local Korean War veteran?and then painted, labeled and tapped carefully into the turf by hundreds of volunteers of every age and interest, were?the once-a-year memorial to the fallen in America?s two longest wars, in Iraq and Afghanistan.

?We have right now?6,378?casualties,? said?the man in the cap, who introduced himself as?John Rogers.? ?Each cross has a label, with the name and unit and casualty date?and if we can keep this going we?re not gonna forget them.?

I told him his?wife?Joyce?had?explained his motivation to me:?on the day he came home to San Francisco from?his war,?Vietnam, a ?hippie girl? protester?had met him as he stepped off the ship and let him know for the first time what his welcome home would be like????no matter his two Purple Hearts and three tours fighting for his country.

John?nodded.? ?She come up to me, she stops and holds up her arms like this??? He pantomimed carrying an infant.???And she says, ?Hey, you baby burner!??

So in 2004,?with?the controversial Iraq war a year old and Afghanistan an intensifying warzone following 9/11, he decided to see to it that the veterans fighting and dying in those two conflicts would be treated differently.? He got some fellow veterans to help him find the wood for the crosses and to fabricate simple labels,?and?talked the town into giving him the use of a piece of land. Then he?set up the first ?Field of Heroes.?

It was a simple idea, ?sort of like the Vietnam?Memorial in Washington,? Rogers said.? A gathering place where each name with identifying details would allow loved ones to reclaim moments of personal connection and remembrance, while permitting strangers who just needed to give thanks a gateway to learn what they choose to learn about the heroes who gave their lives so the rest of us can continue to flourish in ours.

That first year, there were fewer than 1,400 crosses.? Now, with well over 6,000, there?s almost no more room for additional crosses on Century High?s field;? but the Iraq War is effectively over, and Afghanistan is winding down.

Mike Taibbi / NBC News

Iraq war veteran Bruce Marley paints the crosses marking fallen comrades at Pocatello, Idaho's 'Field of Heroes.' Each cross includes the soldier's name, rank, unit, and type of casualty.

?If we?re lucky, we won?t need this eventually,? Rodgers said.? ?But look,? he?continued, gesturing.??Now we have people?? veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan???they come here and find the special friend they lost over there???they get down on their knees and pray, in front of their crosses.?

And then there are the loved ones of the fallen:?like Tiffany Petty, whose husband Jerrick?Petty, with two toddlers back home in Pocatello, volunteered to go to Iraq only to be killed three days after landing.? Tiffany spent?several days with the volunteers affixing labels on the crosses of the other war dead, whose service and sacrifice have too often been overlooked by too many.

?I?ve seen that happen, and it just hurts,? she told me.??It hurts your heart, it hurts your soul???we need to remember these people.?? She looked across the broad field,?a?thick coil of labels hanging from one wrist.? ?And we need to remember them not as a group of people, but as?specific?people.?

Prepping for Memorial Day

For a few years now, Pocatello?s ?Field of Heroes? has been too big a job for John Rogers to handle with just a handful of friends.? Now Bannock County is lending a hand, and whole platoons of volunteers plow into a full week of preparatory work so the field will be ready when the long Memorial Day weekend starts.?

Mike Taibbi / NBC News

Pocatello, Idaho's annual memorial, 'Field of Heroes,' honors each of the dead service members who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Scout troops, high school kids,?and?senior citizens pitch in, alongside?strangers?who are?moved to lend a hand. Big tents with generator-fired heaters?warm?the volunteers;?the local Sign-A-Rama shop makes?and donatesthe waterproof labels;?and professional surveyors measure?the field and line?up the rows so the matrix of crosses looks the way it should.? In the middle of the Snake River Plain, in the shadow of the foothills of the Rockies, more than a full brigade of the honored dead?appear?in silent and precise formation.

The visitors come from all over the?West, bonding?over?a patriotism that?s as humbling as it is palpable,?and?understanding each other?s tears.??In fact, there?s nothing like it anywhere in the country, though the feelings generated by a visit to this Pocatello yearly shrine are like those?that arise from?a famous national shrine:

?Arlington Cemetery is a long way from here,? said?Pocatello Mayor Brian Blad.? ?There?s a special spirit there???but you come here, you can feel that same spirit.?

?It?s immense now,? Rogers said, a touch of wistfulness in his voice as he surveyed?what his simple idea had turned into.? ?But it?s not just a field of crosses?you can come out and read each name?the dates, the places they died?and if you want you can learn their stories.

?It?s important, that we don?t forget the young people we?ve sent to war.?

The old soldier smiled.? ?Oh yeah,? he said, pointing to the flags stretched by the breeze on the periphery of the field. Each flag?was?accompanied by a yellow streamer.? ?I still make the printed yellow ribbons for every local soldier coming home.? I?ll keep doing that.?

Reddit's Alexis Ohanian And Activists Aim To Build A 'Bat-Signal For ...

By Andy Greenberg

2171185463 92a40441ab m Reddits Alexis Ohanian And Activists Aim To Build A Bat Signal For The InternetThe ?blackout? of Web sites to protest the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in January was an unprecedented show of Internet solidarity against bad legislation. But with new net-threatening measures like ACTA and CISPA popping out of Congress on a practically monthly basis, one online entrepreneur and a group of net activists want to enable regular SOPA-style mass protests at the push of a button.

Alexis Ohanian, the 29-year old founder of social news site Reddit, has partnered with the online advocacy group Fight for the Future to create what they?re calling the ?Internet Defense League.? Ohanian describes the project, which they plan to officially launch next month, as a ?Bat-Signal for the Internet.? Any website owner can sign up on the group?s website to add a bit of code to his or her site?or receive that code by email at the time of a certain campaign?that can be triggered in the case of a political crisis like SOPA, adding an activist call-to-action to all the sites involved, such as a widget or banner asking users to sign petitions, call lawmakers, or boycott companies.

?People who wish to be tapped can see, oh look, the Bat-Signal is up. Time to do something,? says Ohanian. ?Whatever website you own, this is a way for you to be notified if something comes up and take some basic actions? If we aggregate everyone that?s doing it, the numbers start exploding.?

The embedded code on participating sites might do more than just display a mere banner ad, says Tiffiny Cheng, co-director of Internet-focused political advocacy group Fight for the Future, and could even ?

Top 5 Attention Grabbers to Start Your Cover Letter

Article Directory :: Business - General Articles

Imagine yourself as an HR manager on a typical Monday morning. You have a cup of coffee and a stack of applications that you have to look through. Almost each and everyone are very close to being the same, but all of a sudden one stands out with an attention grabber. All of a sudden you are wake and very interested in this person. Now hopefully if you weren't the HR manager at that time that it would be you that stand out. Nothing to worry about because we are going to give you the top five attention grabbers to make that HR manager interested in you!

1. Dropping the name of the person who referred you:

Nine out of ten times you are very likely to get a call for an interview if you drop the name of the person that referred you. The reason for this being is that if they hired that person; why not hire someone that is very closely alike.

Example: "At the suggestion of John Doe, I am contacting you to express my great interest in the open position of ?..

2. Research the HR Manager:

If you know who the HR manger is, and you really want the job, you should do some research on the individual. See if there were any articles written by them and if so, quote something from their article. Flattery can sometimes go a long way with employment.

3. Research the Company:

In almost every article that I have written, you should ALWAYS research the company. Keys to find out are their mission statement, future, and products that they make. Quote a recent statistic about the company or relevant article to show that you know your information.

4. Lead with one of you most relevant successes that apply to the position:

State astounding achievements that are recent in your career, but make sure they are relevant to the position you are applying for. Stating information that is irrelevant to the position can lead the reader in a different direction.

5. Use Higher Level Words:

Get out your thesaurus because HR managers love it when a cover letter applies the English language to the greatest extent. What I mean is that you should use words like "amazing", "enthusiastic", and "astounding" in your cover letter. These words add that spice to your cover letter and will show the HR manager that you are highly educated. Other lingo that you should research is the business that you are going into. The lingo in banking is very different than that of a mechanic.

Using these top five tips when learning how to write a cover letter can come in very handy and will help you to stand out and say "Here I am!"
