We've seen a host of security threats over the past little while, ranging from large-scale, state-sponsored attacks on computers in the Middle East to relatively dinky threats scamming users through Angry Birds replicas. But, whether it's national security or a few quid at stake, security companies around the world are encouraging consumers to step up their digital protection. Apparently not content with having conquered the worlds of online retail and e-books in the US, Amazon is extending its dominion to Europe. The company has announced the UK rollout of its Groupon-like AmazonLocal deals site, which will make its debut this side of the Atlantic with London-based deals. Amazon is also bringing its Amazon Appstore for Android to Europe, and our fingers are perpetually crossed for an eventual European launch of the Kindle Fire.

Good news for safety-minded cyclists. Google has added GPS-enabled mobile biking directions and turn-by-turn voice-guided navigation to Google Maps for users in 10 countries. "We know how popular cycling is in many parts of the world, so we wanted to include as much bike trail data as possible to provide efficient routes, allow riders to customize their trips, make use of bike lanes, calculate rider-friendly routes that avoid big hills and busy roads," the company wrote.

IFA has dominated the news cycle this week, with a ton of exciting, high-profile product launches. Today, we learned about a handful of new Windows 8-optimised machines from Toshiba, a touchscreen Samsung Series 5 ultrabook, and a new dual-core smartphone from HTC called the Desire X, among other things.
