Women's hockey upends York

TORONTO (September 14, 2012) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's hockey team got their season off a good note on Thursday night as they defeated the York Lions 5-3.

Just days after training camp opened, the Hawks jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the second period and hung on to pick up the victory. Tammy Freiburger of Wingham, Ont., paced Laurier with two points, including the game-winning goal. Other goal scorers for the Hawks included Paula Lagamba of Toronto, Laura Brooker of Fergus, Ont., Candice Styles of Orangeville, Ont., and Danelle Im of Toronto. Goaltenders Erika Thunder of Buffalo Point, Man., and rookie Kayla Brown of Lively, Ont., split the game with Thunder earning the win after allowing just one goal.

The Hawks will now face a tough early season test as they will battle the defending CIS Champions, the Calgary Dinos, on Friday night in Toronto. The game pits the reigning No. 1 team in the country against the national champions. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Varsity Arena.
