Ideum's MT65 Presenter: a $17,500, 65-inch, multi-touch display for your own museum

Ideum's 65-inch MT65 Presenter is a multi-touch 3D display designed for public spaces, so large that Surface 2.0's looking a bit sheepish right now. The aforementioned tempered-glass mega-screen has a sensor that'll identify 32 individual points of touch (to think: we thought five-and-ten finger touch was impressive) and a PC with a 2.2GHz Core i7 CPU, 256GB SSD and GeForce GTX 460 nestled inside the four-inch "vandal proof" aluminum frame. There's also a Carl Zeiss-lensed HD webcam with a stereo microphone for those moments when you want to see your beloved's face in eye-popping detail. Today's release of the unit is running Windows 7, but the company has announced that in March you'll also be able to get Linux editions of this and its MT55 Platform unit too. The $17,500 you'll spend also gets you access to the GestureWorks SDK for rolling-your-own tactile apps: museum curators with some budget to blow should head on past the break to read the PR before working out how to justify having one in your office to your boss.

Triangle Startup Factory Re-Launches Accelerator; Promises $50K To Each Founding Team

tsflogoToday, serial entrepreneurs and mentors Chris Heivly and Dave Neal are kicking off the re-launch of their North Carolina-based startup accelerator, Triangle Startup Factory, in the hopes of providing entrepreneurs with a founder-friendly option for accelerating their early-stage tech businesses. To make Triangle Startup Factory an appealing alternative, the accelerator will run two three-month-long programs over the next four years. Each batch will consist of five to seven startups, and founding teams will receive a $50,000 capital investment upon being accepted -- but, perhaps the best part is that Triangle is promising an additional $20,000 to $150,000 in convertible notes to each startup that completes the program.

NICE unable to endorse new treatment for prostate cancer

NICE, the healthcare guidance body, has today published final draft guidance not recommending cabazitaxel (Jevtana, Sanofi) in combination with prednisone or prednisolone as a second line treatment for prostate cancer.

Commenting on the draft guidance published today Sir Andrew Dillon, Chief Executive of NICE said: "We need to be sure that new treatments provide sufficient benefits to patients to justify the significant resources the NHS would need to make available. Although cabazitaxel has been shown to be effective in extending life, it is also associated with a number of side effects [7]. The committee was concerned about the nature of the health-related quality of life information provided by the manufacturer.

"Once these factors had been taken into account, the independent Committee appraising this drug concluded that it would not provide enough health benefit to justify its cost, which means it would not be a cost effective use of limited NHS resources."

The draft guidance on cabazitaxel is now with consultees, who have the opportunity to appeal against it. Until NICE issues final guidance, NHS bodies should make decisions locally on the funding of specific treatments. This draft guidance does not mean that people currently taking cabazitaxel will stop receiving it. They have the option to continue treatment until they and their clinicians consider it appropriate to stop.

Ends

Notes to Editors

About cabazitaxel

1. The draft guidance will be available at http://guidance.nice.org.uk/TA/Wave23/31 from 12 January 2012.

2. The main treatment options for patients whose disease progresses after first line docetaxel include mitoxantrone and retreatment with docetaxel retreatment. Other chemotherapy regimens used in this setting were 5FU, cyclophosphamide and carboplatin/etoposide.

3. The Committee concluded that cabazitaxel resulted in a mean improvement of greater than 3 months in mean overall survival

4. If a drug meets the criteria to be considered under NICE's supplementary advice for end of life treatments, then a higher cost per QALY may be accepted. There is no set threshold cost per QALY for drugs that meet the end of life criteria, but since the supplementary advice was introduced, the highest cost per QALY of a recommended drug has been ?50,000 (TA169 - Sunitinib (first-line) for renal cell carcinoma).

The Committee considered that the most plausible ICER would be above ?87,500 per QALY gained.

5. The drug did meet the criteria to be considered under NICE's end of life considerations. However, the Committee considered that the additional weight needed to bring the Incremental Cost Effectiveness Ratio (ICER) into the range considered a cost-effective use of NHS resources was too great.

6. Each cycle of treatment with cabazitaxel costs approximately ?3,700. The median number of cycles received in the TROPIC study was 6; therefore cabazitaxel would cost a median of ?22,200 per patient.

7. Side effects: The most commonly occurring adverse reactions are related to bone marrow suppression which include anaemia, leukopenia, neutropenia, and thrombocytopenia and gastrointestinal events such as diarrhoea. Other very common adverse reactions include fatigue, nausea, vomiting, constipation, asthenia, haematuria, back pain, anorexia, pyrexia, dyspnoea, abdominal pain, dysgeusia, cough, arthralgia, and alopecia.

For the Committee, haematological adverse events and diarrhoea were major concerns. The Committee noted that the incidence of neutropenia was lower among participants recruited at European centres than other centres. The Committee was concerned that in TROPIC more participants in the cabazitaxel arm died from cardiac and renal complications than in the mitoxantrone arm.

Following consultation on the draft recommendations the Committee considered three sources of data presented by the manufacturer: the results of studies evaluating cardiac toxicity associated with cabazitaxel; the conclusions of a review by an expert panel of renal events observed with cabazitaxel; and post-marketing safety data. It concluded that there is no evidence of additional risk other than that included in the summary of product characteristics.

8. The SMC does not recommend cabazitaxel for this condition.

About NICE

9. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) is the independent organisation responsible for providing national guidance and standards on the promotion of good health and the prevention and treatment of ill health

10. NICE produces guidance in three areas of health:

  • public health - guidance on the promotion of good health and the prevention of ill health for those working in the NHS, local authorities and the wider public and voluntary sector
  • health technologies - guidance on the use of new and existing medicines, treatments, medical technologies (including devices and diagnostics) and procedures within the NHS
  • clinical practice - guidance on the appropriate treatment and care of people with specific diseases and conditions within the NHS.

11. NICE produces standards for patient care:

  • quality standards - these reflect the very best in high quality patient care, to help healthcare practitioners and commissioners of care deliver excellent services
  • Quality and Outcomes Framework - NICE develops the clinical and health improvement indicators in the QOF, the Department of Health scheme which rewards GPs for how well they care for patients

12. NICE provides advice and support on putting NICE guidance and standards into practice through its implementation programme, and it collates and accredits high quality health guidance, research and information to help health professionals deliver the best patient care through NHS Evidence.

Veteran Spanish politician Fraga dies at age 89 (AP)

MADRID ? Manuel Fraga Iribarne, a blunt-talking politician who founded Spain's ruling conservative party and ignited divisive reactions as the last surviving minister from Gen. Francisco Franco's right-wing regime, has died. He was 89.

Spanish news agency Europa Press said Fraga died late Sunday of heart failure at his Madrid home, citing a family member.

In a career spanning 60 years, Fraga served as Franco's information and tourism minister and as Spain's interior minister after the dictator died in 1975. But the job he coveted most ? being Spain's prime minister ? always eluded him.

Still, his influence on the country remained lasting.

Most Franco ministers quickly faded into obscurity after democracy was restored in 1978, but Fraga soldiered on. He helped write the country's post-Franco, democratic Constitution that was passed in 1978.

Although he repeatedly failed to be elected prime minister, he nudged Franco loyalists toward the political center, founded what is now the Popular Party and groomed Jose Maria Aznar to replace him as leader of the Spanish right in 1989.

In the post-Franco years, he ran his native Galicia region with a tight grip for 15 years and then settled into a seat in the Spanish Senate.

To the Spanish left, Fraga was a reviled and outspoken reminder of a right-wing regime that kept Spain isolated from Europe and the rest of the world for decades. In Galicia, critics say, he ruled despotically, manipulating a conservative political culture based on patronage to stay in power.

Defenders, however, note that Fraga promulgated a Franco-era law that did away with media censorship ? seen as a hint of change in the hardline regime. As tourism minister, Fraga worked to open up Spain to the outside world and bring in cash-laden visitors. A famous tourism slogan ? "Spain is different" ? which morphed into a popular Spanish saying was coined under Fraga's watch.

He is also credited with transforming northwestern Galicia ? traditionally one of Spain's poorest, most backward regions ? by building modern roads, bridges and other infrastructure, much of it paid for with EU funds. He boosted tourism and promoted Galicia's separate language and culture during his reign as president there from 1990 to 2005.

In a 2001 press luncheon, Fraga offered no apologies for his part in Spain's four decades of dictatorship.

"One cannot choose the period of history in which one lives," Fraga said, before quickly changing the subject.

Fraga was born Nov. 23, 1922, in the northwestern town of Villalba. He married Carmen Estevez in 1948 and they had five children. She died in 1996.

After distinguishing himself in academics and earning a law degree, Fraga held several midlevel positions in the Franco regime until he was promoted to minister of information and tourism in 1962.

In September 2011, 60 years after beginning his career, Fraga announced his retirement from politics, saying he would not seek another term in the Senate.

Fraga was noted for his rapid-fire yet mumbling style of speech and an impetuous streak, exemplified when he once snipped the cord of telephone in his office when it would not stop ringing.

Contemporary Spanish history is full of images of Fraga as well as his famed one-liners.

As interior minister in the first post-Franco government, but prior to the restoration of democracy, Spanish media reported that Fraga blurted out "La calle es mia!" ? "The streets are mine!" ? as he put down street demonstrations by labor unions, communists and others. Fraga later denied having said this.

In 1966, Fraga engaged in a famous effort at damage control when four American hydrogen bombs fell on the southern Spanish village of Palomares after a mid-air collision between a B-52 bomber and a refueling plane.

None of them exploded, but radiation was strewn when the plutonium-containing detonators on two of the bombs exploded. These two and a third bomb that had also hit the ground were found within a day.

But the fourth bomb had fallen into the sea and eluded recovery for 75 days.

While crews were frantically searching for it, Fraga ? a portly man in baggy swim trunks ? joined U.S. Ambassador Angier Biddle Duke in taking a much-publicized swim off Palomares' beach to show it was safe to go into the water.

Italian shipwreck missing tally leaps to 29

Six people are dead and 29 people remain missing in the wake of cruise ship Costa Concordia running aground Friday off Italy's coast. Rock Center took a boat out to the partially sunken ship with an experienced yacht captain who said that the cruise ship's captain was "completely irresponsible." Crew members and passengers on the ship described the harrowing nightmare. Harry Smith reports.

GIGLIO, Italy -- A stricken Italian cruise liner shifted on its rocky resting place as worsening weather disrupted an increasingly despairing hunt for survivors and authorities almost doubled their estimate of the number missing to 29 people.

As the Costa Concordia's owners accused their captain of veering too close to shore in a "salute" to residents of a Tuscan island, the giant ship slid a little on Monday, threatening to plunge 500,000 gallons of fuel below the Mediterranean waters of the surrounding nature reserve.

The slippage forced rescuers to suspend efforts to find anyone still alive after three days in the capsized hull, resting on a jagged slope outside the picturesque harbor on the island of Giglio. Most of the 4,200 passengers and crew survived, despite hours of chaos.

Captain Francesco Schettino was arrested a day after the disaster accused of manslaughter and abandoning the ship before all of the people were evacuated. Prosecutors say he also refused to go back on board when requested by the coastguard.

Rescue operations have been called off after the Costa Concordia slipped further into the sea. Rescue workers had to be plucked from the ship by helicopter. ITN's Neil Connery reports.

Schettino was due to appear before magistrates for questioning on Tuesday morning.

An Italian Coast Guard official, Marco Brusco, said late Monday that the number of people missing had been revised up to 29 -- 25 passengers and four members of staff -- from 16, showing how much uncertainty still surrounded the disaster

He didn't explain the jump, but indicated 10 of the missing are Germans.

'They were really excited'
Two Americans are also among the missing. Jerry and Barbara Heil live in White Bear Lake, a suburb of about 25,000 people 15 miles outside St. Paul, Minn.

Sarah Heil, their daughter, told WBBM radio in Chicago that her parents had been looking forward to their 16-day vacation.

Off the Tuscan coast of Italy, search and rescue efforts resumed Monday along the capsized cruise liner, three days since the ship struck rock and flipped on its side, with more than 4,000 people on board. NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports.

"They raised four kids and sent them all to private school, elementary to college, so they never had any money," Sarah Heil said. "So when they retired, they went traveling. And this was to be a big deal ? a 16-day trip. They were really excited about it."

Brusco said there was still "a glimmer of hope" there could be survivors on parts of the vast cruise liner that have yet to be searched. The last survivor, a crewman who had broken his leg, was rescued on Sunday.

Luciano Roncalli, a senior firefighter, told Reuters that all the unsubmerged areas of the liner had been searched.

Environment Minister Corrado Clini said he would declare a state of emergency because of the risk that the ship's fuel would leak into the pristine Tuscan Archipelago National Park. No fuel spillage has been detected so far, he said on an Italian television show on Monday evening.

Should rougher seas dislodge the wreck and cause it to sink or break up, that could scupper any hopes for the owners, a unit of Florida's Carnival Corp., of salvaging a liner which cost hundreds of millions of dollars to build just six years ago.

Regardless of the waters they're operating in, cruise ships are governed by a series of international maritime treaties that set standards for everything from evacuation procedures to emergency crew training. NBC's Tom Costello reports.

Investigators say the ship was far too close to the shore and its owners, Costa Cruises, said the captain had carried out the rash maneuver to "make a bow" to people on Giglio island, who included a retired Italian admiral.

Schettino denies charges of manslaughter.

The father of the ship's head waiter told Reuters that his son had telephoned him before the accident to say the crew would salute him by blowing the ship's whistle as they passed close by Giglio, where both the waiter, Antonello Tievoli, and his 82-year-old father Giuseppe live.

Costa Cruises chief executive Pier Luigi Foschi on Monday blamed errors by Schettino for the disaster. He told a news conference the company would provide its captain with any assistance he required. "But we need to acknowledge the facts and we cannot deny human error," he added.

Video: Junior dos Santos tries surfing, falls on face

Despite being a devastating knockout artist in the cage, Junior dos Santos is a smiling, affable man outside of it. He, UFC lightweight Gray Maynard and Octagon Girl Arianny Celeste stopped by a surfing school in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil as part of the run up to UFC 142 this weekend. They met with the students and even tried surfing.

If you're wondering what it looks like when a heavyweight champion surfs, here you go:

And yes, if the champ makes it to his feet on dry land, he will get applause. That's just how it goes. He gets extra credit for pulling off the Ron Santo-esque heel click.
