Public health was not part of the initial discussions about shale gas extraction and as a result there is little information about any health impacts of the technologies and process.

At a two-day workshop, the Institute of Medicine will use hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking," as a case example to evaluate the application of health impact assessments to identify and explore potential health consequences of emerging energy technologies.

DETAILS

The workshop will run from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. EDT Monday, April 30, and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. EDT Tuesday, May 1, at House of Sweden, 2900 K St., N.W., Washington, D.C.

Seating is limited. Those who cannot attend may watch a live webcast. Registration for the meeting and webcast and an agenda are available at http://iom.edu/Activities/Environment/EnvironmentalHealthRT/2012-APR-30.aspx.
